Cannot Create Heirarchical Genres in Calibre

I am new to Calibre. I have tried to follow the instructions for creating a genre column with heirarchical entries, and i believe I have done everything correctly including setting the column as heirarchical and configuring Sort to By name. However, when I try to create a subgenre it simply creates a new genre. For example, for one book i want to create:

-Field Guides
-Birds

To do so I entered the following in the Genre tab of the book's custom metadata:

Field Guides.Birds

However, instead of getting the result i want I simply get a single genre called Field Guides.Birds. I have tried using commas and ampersands instead of periods, but no luck.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks!

Then after restarting calibre, you must tell calibre that the column is to be treated as a hierarchy. Go to Preferences  →  Look & feel  →  Tag browser  →  Hierarchy and searching and choose the new Genre column as having hierarchical items.
