Tag editing in bulk edit metadata issue

I am editing books in bulk, so I download just the metadata then edit one by one. I don't have tags downloaded so I can edit them myself. However, sometimes (randomly) as I add tags to the individual book, it forces me to add one letter at a time and wants me to choose from the drop-down menu. I have to type a letter, click back into the tag box, type another letter, then (if there is still a tag with those letters) click into the box and type another letter to force it to let me type a tag.

This doesn't happen every time I download metadata in bulk, but when it does it does it for all books I'm editing.

It wouldn't be quite as annoying if the tags I put in were added to my tags, but they aren't so I may type "historical fiction" ten times, because I have "history" and have to do the above process each time.(Yes, I do add "history" then edit)

Suggestions?

IMO your issue should be in its own thread - so I've moved it.

Are you deleting the previous book that used that same Tag?
Calibre cleans up many of the DB entries when the last use goes away.
Some folk create a DummyTags book that has the TAGS they want to use elsewhere (no formats)

If disk space is an issue: Just open the MDE and delete the format, that leaves the metadata (and lookup help) intact.

There are a couple of Tweaks that may be pertinent :-

preselect_first_completion
completion_mode

Easiest way to find them is search for 'complet' in Tweak dialogue, viz:

Here is a TAG feature (trick) you can use in bulk.
Select all books to be tagged with the same Tag: Tap "E" (MDE in bulk because more than 1 book: In the Add Tags box, simply add the tag(s) that belong to ALL SEECTED: save (exit)
Doing this again for a different set of books (even if it included a previous tagged book, does not remove THOSE tags), is how you tag faster

I'm not sure what you mean by deleting the previous book; however, I am not deleting books. After I bulk download the metadata I review each book individually to be sure the right metadata has been downloaded and to add the tags. As I do each book I click next. When it happens, it happens from the first book. It doesn't happen every time I bulk download, and my disk space is fine.

MacOS Sequoia 15.6.1. However, I've had this issue since before the current update.

This is helpful, and when I have a series of books I do it this way. However, my issue is when I've bulk downloaded the metadata for a bunch of different books and am going to through the books individually to check the metadata. So I'm reviewing the metadata and adding tags to individual books within the "review downloaded metadata" selection. This is where I sometimes have the issue. It also does this in the "series" box, although I just skip that and add it after I'm done reviewing all the books.
