An issue in Preview

Hi Kevin and Diap;

Please, open the attached epub; you'll see an image with a svg filter applied to emulate a metal surface. Now go to Metal_Filter.svg file and where you see

Code:
   <feFlood flood-color="red" result="solid_color"/>
change the color "red" for any other color (blue, green, orange, khaki, coral, whatever) and the change is not reflected in Preview Pane, even if I press "Update Preview Window" button. If you open the epub with any of the Sigil's plugin, the change is present. Why Preview Pane is not showing changes in the epub code?

By changing an item in the svg file and not an xhtml file, Preview has no way of knowing that the svg file was changed underneath it when reload was hit, so the cached version is loaded.

So when editing that svg file in CodeView is somehow not writing that change to disk immediately. Have you tried closing the SVG tab and then try the reload in Preview? Does that work?

If not, does closing the xhtml CV tab and reopening it detect the change.

I get the svg to reload by selecting another open codeview tab and then back to the tab with the svg. Works every time!

I must have missed something here. I don't see any color - neither the original red nor any other that I might edit in.
Is some plugin required?

You have to open the .svg file in Code View to make the change mentioned.

It is a bug. I think editing svg files in CodeView needs a mechanism like we use when editing a CSS file to force save that tab and signal the need to reload Preview.

I will look into it further.

But closing that svg tab or making another tab active and moving back, should workaround this issue..

What is the role of the svg filter?

I presumed that because the Metal_Filter.svg file contained the entry
Quote:
<feFlood flood-color="red" result="solid_color"/>
I should see something red or at least reddish in the Preview pane when the Section0001.xhtml file was selected (before attempting any edit).

No matter which file I select, I never see any hint of red in Preview so what would I expect to see if the color was changed to blue or whatever?

What do I need to do to see the effect of the flood-color in the SVG filter file?

(since it's not April 1, I suppose it's not a question of the 'Emperor's new clothes' )

The issue is also present if in the .xhtml file I add anything. For example, open the file I attached, change the color to "blue" in the filter file, go back to the .xhtml file (no change is present) and after that, add a new paragraph (for example <p>This is a test</p> and the color image remains unchanged.

Yes, it doesn't work

Yes, that works; by closing the CV tab and reopening it applies the change; also changing the CV (without closing it) does the trick.

The same role of any of the css filter. But svg filters are more powerfull than the css ones.

Post a screenshot of your output; there must be some kind of bug with your system, because when you open the epub I attached, as I said in a previous post, you should see something like:

The original svg file (image1.svg) is a plain grayscale image (full filled with color="#777"). The final color, the brushed metal effect and 3D appearance are product of the applied filter.

Thanks for the reply, RbnJrg.

Your attached image is the first time I've seen any red color.

I find it hard to believe I've a system problem because I've tried on my MacBook, Linux and W11 machines and I always get a greyscale image whether I select the .xhtml file or the image file. I'm using Sigil 2.6.0 with Qt 6.8.2 on all 3 machines.

That's why I wondered if there is a plugin needed to correctly view the SVG image.

Attached is a screenshot from my linux machine showing Preview of the file Section0001.xhtml

For what it may be worth, I see what @philja is reporting. If I remove the url from the link to the filter, it shows a solid colour in Preview.

I have a potential fix, but I am in the same boat as DNSB and philja. I do not see any color at all (before or after the change from red to blue).

So I can not even test my fix!

So something is funny.
