Baum, L. Frank: The Woggle-Bug Book. v1. 27 Aug 2025

For over a century, readers of all ages have loved the Oz stories; and many of the Oz characters and situations have become a part of popular culture.

The Woggle-Bug Book, a spinoff from the Oz novels, has long been one of the rarest items in the Baum bibliography. Baum's text has been controversial for its use of ethnic humor stereotypes.

This book grew out of a promotional project, “Queer Visitors from the Marvelous Land of Oz” (1904-5), a popular comic strip that promoted Baum's second Oz book, The Marvelous Land of Oz (1904). The comic strip, written by Baum and illustrated by Walt McDougall, brought Oz characters including the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, and others to the United States for various humorous adventures.

The Woggle-Bug Book employs the same concept: H. M. Woggle-Bug, T. E. (Highly Magnified Woggle-Bug, Thoroughly Educated) is shown maladjusted to life in an unnamed American city.

(With 22 full-page color illustrations
and assorted cover and title-page images.)

Author L. Frank Baum (1856–1919), “the Royal Historian of Oz,” is best known for creating the imaginary land of Oz, and especially for the first book in the series, a classic of children’s literature, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

This book's artist, Ike Morgan (1871–1913), was a well-known newspaper illustrator for several big newspapers in Chicago and New York. He had earlier provided illustrations for Baum's American Fairy Tales (1901).
