The Silence I Never Chose
By Sajjad Hussain The morning after felt almost unreal. Maria woke to the pale London light streaming through the curtains, soft and grey, the kind of light that made the world seem gentler than it really was. For a moment she thought she was dreaming — Adam’s jacket still hung over the chair, his scent still lingering in the air, reminding her that last night had not been an illusion. She sat up, brushing her hair back, her heart still heavy but warmed by the memory of his arms around her. For months, silence had been her only companion, but Adam had cracked it open with nothing more than his presence. Downstairs, the kettle whistled. She found him in the kitchen, sleeves rolled up, making tea like it was the most ordinary thing in the world. But nothing about this was ordinary. “Morning,” he said, his voice low, eyes catching hers with a softness that unsettled her. Maria managed a faint smile. “You’re still here.” “Where else would I be?” His reply was calm, but there was a weight beneath it, as though he had no intention of leaving — not today, not yet. As they sat across from each other, sipping tea, silence fell again — but this time, it wasn’t the kind that crushed her. It was lighter, charged, as though words were unnecessary. And then it happened. A brush of his hand across hers, hesitant at first, then deliberate. Her breath caught. She should have pulled away. She didn’t. Adam leaned in, his voice barely above a whisper. “Maria…” Her name on his lips felt like both a question and a promise. And before she could find the strength to resist, his lips met hers — soft, searching, full of all the unspoken things they had both carried for far too long. It wasn’t the kiss of strangers. It was the kiss of two people who had been circling each other in silence, finally daring to collide. When it broke, Maria sat frozen, trembling, her mind a storm. She wanted to speak but couldn’t. Adam only touched her cheek, gently, his eyes asking if she regretted it. She didn’t answer. She couldn’t. But her silence spoke more than words ever could. ✨ Full book available on Amazon.
