Uneven bottom margins in Epub to PDF conversion

Hi!

I realize Calibre was never meant to produce professional PDFs. However, once I found a workaround for the fact that KDP ignores the odd/even offset feature, I've found it to work beautifully.

There's only one problem. A significant number of the bottom page margins don't match the rest of the book. They're off by a line, so they don't look right next to the adjoining page.

Is there any workaround, or a potential fix?

Thanks in advance.

In the ePub, you have to set widows and orphans both to 1 in the CSS.

Thanks! It worked.

Of course now I have to decide between widows and orphans or even pages or find some sort of workaround.

The only workaround is to load the eBook into a word processor and edit each page so they end at the same place.

Works best anyway for professional PDFs.

No doubt, but my workflow is geared toward epubs. And I take a certain amount of pleasure from getting nice results from free software all the way down the production chain.

So far, all the genres I've published in have been ebook-dominated, though what I'm getting ready to release may have a higher likelihood of print sales.

EXTREME printer's offset

You can change and EPUB to PDF via calibre and calibre even allows a 'printer offset' (inner margin, either left or right, is wider than outer margin). However, Amazon will not take calibre's output for margins. PDFJAM is the way to go. It does not have a GUI. You can do almost everything imaginable with it, but you have to start with a PDF. Of course most uploads to Amazon are for ebooks, but to submit for printed books to Amazon it is best to upload PDFs. I have in the past asked about altering calibre's method of doing a printer's offset but, apparently, there is something extremely difficult in restructuring its margin capabilities for Amazon's proprietary requirements.
If there are images or charts or whatnot the bottom line will be a tad off. Also, if you set an extra bit of space between paragraphs the bottoms will be off.
Best regards, Pop
