Amazon metadata download problems
Has Amazon set up a permanent block for Calibre metadata searches?

Today I tried to get metadata for a book. And while I got data from Fantastic Fiction I got nothing from Amazon. Which is a bit unusual.

When I check the log it said:

Here is the problem. It has been more than 12 hours since I tried to get metadata. I got metadata for about 12 books yesterday. noticed the last couple had no Amazon, checked and saw the same message. So stopped.

Normally I just wait an hour or so and try again, but last night I just went to bed to try again today. But its 12 hours later now and I still have a captcha?

Am I just on a long time out now? or what?

Seems to be working for me. I added the book with author, title, Amazon ASIN and ISBN-13 to calibre and did a metadata fetch. Returned the correct book ebook edition.

Amazon is definitely more aggressive blocking lately. The details only amazon themselves can know.

Yeah I am still getting the Captcha error today. After my post yesterday I uncheck Amazon as a metadata source. Today when I turned it back on, my first search came back with the captcha error.

calibre.ebooks.metadata.sources.amazon.CaptchaErro r: Amazon returned a CAPTCHA page, probably because you downloaded too many books. Wait for some time and try again.

So it has been well over 24 hours since I have been able to get anything from Amazon and I am still blocked. I wonder if they flagged my IP?

In any case, usually GoodReads or FantasticFiction will return acceptable results, and I can always manually open up Amazon in a browser page if they don't.

But its still annoying.

What country are you in? Some form of geoblocking may be in effect.

Depening on your ISP, turning off modem for a few minutes and back on might give you new IP. Not if static IP (usually have to pay for those though) or a ISP-wide NAT though.

Might also be worth checking if all computers on your network are all clean.

No longer block from Amazon searches.

Now whether they just had me blocked for a couple days, or my Dynamic IP changed from actions of my provider or unexpected modem resets, or something else, I don't know. BUT I will make an effort to pace myself when updating metadata.

Well that did not last long. I have maybe done 1 or 2 Amazon searches a day since they unblocked me. Today I tried searching for metadata and got the Captcha error again. I have done no more than 4-5 searches in the last 3 days. I am wondering if they are just doing random Captchas now on searches.
