I want a 10-inch B&W E-ink reader ...

I want a 10-inch B&W E-ink reader ... that will link to my calibre server.

No ghosting, good battery life. Decent processor, decent in bed.

Is this too much to ask?

You might want to look at the Kobo Elipsa 2E but a bit big for bed.

I've had the 10.3″ reMarkable and Kobo Elipsa. I still have a 9.7″ DXG. IMO all are too heavy for bed. The 9.7″ ereaders seem to be all 150dpi, like the DXG, but also it has no WiFi or decent ebook support.

I got an 8″ Sage about 2 or 3 weeks after the Elipsa and it's my favourite. I have 5, 6, 7 inch models too. I gave away the reMarkable and Kobo Elipsa. The reMarkable can't easily use Calibre and the Amazon Scribe is really intended only for use with Amazon's "Cloud" services.

Kobos are best with Calibre, though USB is best method.

The Onyx Boox Go 10.3 is probably the thinnest and most lightweight, but at the cost of no frontlight, which might not be ideal in bed.

Good battery life leaves out the Elipsa 2E. The battery life is not good (IMHO).

Onyx Boox Go 10.3: 375 grams
Elipsa: 383g
Elipsa2: 390g

15 grams is a tiny difference

The Kobo Sage has more actual pixels, so for an image based PDF or Manga etc, it's better. It's 240.8 g, that's 131 grams less than Boox. I found the Sage better than reMarkable or Elipsa for PDFs and it's a much better size for novels and reading in bed.

The Elipsa and Sage are not as good battery life as a Paperwhite 3 or Libra, but still acceptable.

That's for the OP to decide if the battery life is acceptable or not.

It's acceptable to all the people I know with a Sage. Indeed it's up to the OP.

The Boox Go 10.3 has the most pixels. It's 2480x1860, 300 PPI like the Scribe.

The Sage barely has more pixels than the Elipsas. The Elipsas are 1404x1872 vs. 1440x1920 for the Sage.

But no frontlight. Mostly I don't use one, but when you do need it?

Are you confusing the Elipsa 2E with it's MediaTek CPU and the Elipsa with it's AllWinner CPU?

Co-incidentally last night I was given back a reMarkable I'd given away (I'd got an Elipsa and gave it away eventually as it was 100% replaced by a Sage).

The owner had got a Sage because she liked her husband's Sage.

Her parting comment: "It's no use for ebooks and the PC software is terrible".

I see it's had Firmware updates to add local handwriting to text.

PIN

If you put a PIN on a Kobo and forget you can factory reset. All the books etc wiped, but you do do backups?

If you put a PIN on reMarkable the factory reset is inaccessible. Depending on exact firmware or model you have to hack firmware via 3rd party USB tools over USB Networking (Windows beta, might work on Linux, Mac ARM fails) or take it apart and add a hardware interface.

The reMarkable 1 & 2 run same FW, similar too small storage, PDF only, and networking only (WiFi or USB), no USB MTP or Mass storage. Same eink as Elipsa.

Further thoughts
I think the Boox Go 10.3 is a better idea than the "Walled Garden" Kindle Scribe (both 300 dpi). https://www.amazon.co.uk/BOOX-Tablet...dp/B0D4DFT3W3/
But it's £380! Seriously better than a reMarkable.
So I bought a TCL Nxtpaper 11 instead for PDFs to complement the Sage. It's so goof I later bought the Nxtpaper 40 4G phone and then the TCL Nxtpaper 14. The Nxtpaper 11 is better for notes being smaller (10.9″ and 16:10 aspect). The Nxtpaper 14 is 14.25″ and nice 3:2 aspect. Best ever for PDFs (Magazines, text books, data sheets) or proofing 2 up paperback sized PDFs for POD in landscape.

So for novels (epubs) I've not found anything bigger than 8″ Sage that is any good. I'm convinced the 10″ and larger eink and the colour eink (Kaleido and Gallery have different serious issues) are pointless.

I narrowly avoided Sony / Fujitsu digital paper models. The reMarkable 1 & 2 are really for that market.

Edit:
Yes, the returned reMarkable had an evil PIN. 8 hours later I was texted it. People have bought second hand reMarkables or forgotten PIN and discovered they have a brick. Even legitimate sellers sometimes can be contacted, or the seller might have forgotten so sold it. Not all are stolen.

It depends what you want. Reading novels on 10.3" devices can be pretty enjoyable in landscape mode where you get 2 columns side by side like a paper book. It can also be good for those that need bigger text.

Remarkables are not good as eBook readers. I do know some people that love theirs but they use it as notetaking/PDF annotation devices. Not an eBook reader.
