PW2 What to do with PW2? Advice needed

I digged out my Kindle and from the serial number starting with 90D4, I concluded it is Paperwhite 2 (2013)/PW2. It is currently running Kindle 5.8.5.0.2 and Device Update is greyed out.

I can see the latest firmware available for it (or, more precisely, for Kindle 6th gen, which internet tells me is for PW2 for some reason...) is 5.12.2.2

Since I've been out of the Kindle loop for ~10 years, I have some questions hopefully you can help me with.

1. Should I upgrade to 5.12.2.2? Or maybe something else? Will I lose or lock anything I currently have with the current firmware?

2. I will want to jailbreak and try something like Koreader. Does that influence the upgrade question?

3. I heard .mobi is dead and Amazon now allows sending .epubs to your device thought email. Do they convert it to .mobi, or can the latest firmware actually read .epub?

The PW2 *is* a 6th gen Kindle. Generations are within all Kindles since the original. Sequence/iteration numbers are specific to a model of Kindle. The Kindle Paperwhite 2 is the second of the Paperwhite, but was *also* the only model in the 6th generation of Kindles.

Generation roughly aligns to years since the original was released, with a few times when a year went without any new models (2008, 2020, 2023). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Templa..._Kindle_models
