Added books hiding?

So I add several books to Calibre. Then I go back and clean up the metadata (title, author, tags, shelves) and fix or add any required series information.
The problem is that some of the books don't show under the author index initially.
I know I've added them and when I go back and re-add the book, Calibre tells me it is already in the library.
So, I re-add it anyway and at that point the two copies show. I fix one and delete the other.
Has anyone else experienced this?

Is your library on a network drive or being synced to a cloud?

Another possibility:

Look at the status line. That can hint if there is some sort of filtered view in force.

The first is the Restricted view count. If there is one. note the [ ]

This (my sample view) next is the number of books selected (highlighted)

The last count is the Total Calibre Entries (lines in the grid view)

The delay (restarting Calibre) for them to appear, makes me think the Library was created in a system default 'cloud copy' folder (might have been added upgraded by some OS update )
