Does a Kobo update remove plugins, like nightmode?

When connecting my Kobo to Calibre I get the message that there is a new update for the reader. Would installing the update remove my installed plugins, such as nightmode? I have also created genre categories for myshelves that is used in the reader. Will they still work? And what about the books already transferred to the reader, will they still be there or would I have to transfer them again?

I did install an update long time ago, but don't remember what happened.

Which firmware revision is your Clara HD running? What version of calibre? Nightmode is an older add-on and not really needed with newer firmware. Your collections will not be affected nor will the books transferred to the reader unless you are updating from an antique firmware revision.

Newer Kobo firmware supports Dark Mode though your Clara HD will need to use NickelMenu to enable/disable it, The same for Inverted mode. Dark mode is strictly for reading and does not invert images but does require a reboot. Invert is like night mode and inverts everything though it does take a reboot to enable/disable (the NickelMenu entry does this automatically).

A firmware update will not remove NickelMenu.

If by "installed plugins" you're referring to patches, then YES an upgrade of the f/w will remove all of them.

Yes.

Though things added to the config file are mostly OK, like SideloadedMode=true

You and I know that. But some people don't realise that.

The Kobo version is 4.38.21908, 20230822.

I have NickelMenu installed, but it doesn't seem to work. I can see the menu icon at the botton beside Home, My books, Discover and More. When pressing it a square with NickelMenu inside shows up, and pressing this another bigger square shows up and then dissapear. Inside it says something like See KOBOeReader/.addons/nm/doc... Then I can't read more of the text.

I am using Calibre 6.29
I also get the suggestion to update Calibre to 8.01

Is it safe to just update Calibre, or will it remove plugins, settings, for example, my shelves, sortings, and other things I might not even remember now. I have also installed DeDRM removal, KoboUtilties. Is Quality Check a paert of Calibre standard or a installed plugin?

I have installed Nightmode and NickelMode. I remember having to make changes in the nightmode file. NickelMode doesn't work now, probably after the last update. I use myshelves in Calibre for genre category which is then reflected in the reader, so I can seacrh for books according to genre.

It sounds as if you've not completed the installation. You need to configure the menu - see https://pgaskin.net/NickelMenu/ :
Connect you Kobo eReader to your computer again and create a new file (of any type) named KOBOeReader/.adds/nm/config, and follow the instructions in KOBOeReader/.adds/nm/doc to configure NickelMenu.

Okay thanks. Should I fix this before or after updating the reader with the new update?

If memory serves, NickelMenu is supposed to persist through firmware updates. However, my inclination would be to play safe and do the firmware update first.

You should update calibre. Plugins and settings will survive the update.

I've also attached a sample NickelMenu config file. Just copy it into .adds/nm and you should see some menu items when you tap the NickelMenu icon.
Attached Files
File Type: txt NM_config.txt (2.6 KB, 24 views)
