Reading stats are off

My reading stats are off and they don't even make sense.

It says it takes me 0.7 minutes to read one page. This seems to be correct. I remember that's what my other Kobos stated, too. And now it gets weird.

In the stats in the pull out while reading it says, it will take me two hours to finish my book, which has 97 pages left. In the activity stats on the 'More' menu, it says it will take me one hour. And then it gets even weirder. It claims it took me 10.1 hours to read 253 pages.

Also I obviously wasted 189.2 hours reading 22 books with 300 to 400 pages. Even if I subtract the alleged 10.1 hours of my current read, it leaves me with 8.14 hours per book. Books I read in 3 to four hours.

Anyone else having the stats off with some wild math?

That's been the case for me for quite a while. Things like it has taken me 0.4 hours to read the first 56% of a book and it will take me 3 hours to finish it. I suspect some of those calculations are using a default WPM reading speed that does not reflect my reading speed. The only stats that seem semi-reliable are the ones generated when I finish a book.

Good to know there is no evil troll residing in my reader, messing up the stats to push me into the abyss of paranoia, but just a generic case of software stupidity. 😉

What is baffling is that it is inconsistent in itself.

I do not rely heavily on the stats, but I sometimes use the hours read to make a rough calculation of how many books I've read in the last year(s), because the actual number of books is changing when I delete books from my reader.

I've been using Kobo Utilities to save the reading stats to calibre and then extracting them from there.

Hi DNSB,
I noticed that your picture shows the total reading time. How did you get that? Are you using Kobo Utilities for it as well?

You just know me too well

Thank you for your tip! I'll wrangle with Calibre for a bit and see if I can set up something like this, too.

The current Kobo Utilities saves the reading time but in seconds. The column that I have visible just converts that columns to hours/minutes since most people find that easier to read 2 hours, 19 minutes than 8345 seconds.

See the https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=366110 thread for some information on this. For the custom column, the attached image is my setup. The template is listed below. Once the custom column is created, I showed it and hid the original time in seconds column.

Code:
program:

total = $#kobo_time_spent_reading;
hours = floor(total/3600);
minutes = round((total-hours*3600)/60);

def format(v, str):
    if v == 0 then return '' fi;
    return v & ' ' & str & ' '
fed;
format(hours, 'hr') & format(minutes, 'min')
