Problem finding books

Sorry if this has been posted before. I did do a quick search but couldn't find my issue, even in the Sticky.

I have some books that I purchased from Amazon several years ago which are in the Kindle app on my iPad 6. Somehow I acquired a different account over time which is now set up to manage my Kindle content. However, the old account uses an email address which is no longer in use so, long story short, I am unable to move those books to my new account and new iPad. Amazon were completely unhelpful and refused to merge the two accounts.

So I want to try and retrieve those books before I erase the old iPad in order to sell it. I have downloaded Calibre on my Mac and have successfully connected the iPad via the Content Server. However I cannot find the Kindle books when I look for them on the server in Chrome or Safari on the iPad. I can find other files, downloads etc. but no reference to Kindle or its books.

Does anyone know how to get it to see them and how to upload them to Calibre for conversion or storage? That way I can keep the books and not have to purchase them again. Hope the question is clear. Thanks!

It's not just a question of finding them; you also need to remove the DRM or you won't be able to do anything with them.

You won't be able to get them in Calibre from the Kindle app on your iPad. Read the first post here about various methods to download and deDRM Kindle books:

Sadly true, because Amazon is actively trying to stop people from taking their purchased ebooks out of the Kindle ecosystem.

Bold mine. I have the 11th gen basic Kindle. It transfers fine via USB. It's NOT a 2024 device; I bought it July,2023.

Well I wouldn't mind keeping those books in Kindle if I could only access them on the new iPad, or get into the old Amazon account to transfer them.

Have you contacted Amazon customer support and explained (and supply the details of the old account and device)?

Yes I have had two online chats and a phone call with them but they simply reiterate that they don’t allow the transfer of books between accounts and that there’s nothing they can do anyway given I cannot access the account with that old discontinued email address. I think I can only access the books on my old ipad Kindle app because I’ve never signed out of it. If I did I am sure I would lose access altogether.

I’ve just trawled through 17 pages of that thread and it seems to be all about downloading and converting which isn’t my issue. I can’t download the books because I can’t access the account they were purchased under. So I need to do the opposite, which is to upload the books from the Kindle app on my old ipad to my computer or my new ipad. Is there really no way to do that? Or should I be asking this question over in that thread?

Can’t see any way to edit a post so…

Or in another section altogether?

There is no way to transfer the books from the Kindle app on your iPad to somewhere else. Even if you could find and move the files, they would be unreadable, as they're keyed to your old iPad. Kindle books are encrypted for the device they were downloaded to and cannot be read anywhere else. The only way to get those books is to download and de-encrypt them using one of the methods listed in the thread. If none of those methods are accessible to you, then you're out of luck.

Ok, many thanks for clarifying that. Looks like I’m out of luck in that case because the only place I can access the books in the app. Ah well, at least I tried!

The only option you have is to backup the old iPad and then restore to the new iPad and hope the eBooks will work. I cannot say if they do or not. I don't have any eBooks on my iPhone or iPad that has DRM.
