Worth update from 5.14.2 to 5.17.1.0.3?
Hello to all.I i am on 5.14.2 fw jailbraked and i only use koreader to read some free pdf's.I want to ask:
1)Is there any special reason to update to 5.17.1.0.3? (Bug fixes,battery life,speed etc)?
2)If yes: Can i then jailbreak it again with winter break? (I suppose yes)
3)Can update be performed without registering?
4)Can jailbreak be performed without registering?
All i want is to have an unregistered jailbreaked device.(If someone of you think my device is stolen etc,i have told it on another forum from beginning that it was a present from my aunt)

WinterBreak only works on registered Kindles, and changes in the firmware starting with version 5.17.1 kill the jailbreak persistence, so AFAIK it is not possible to have an unregistered and jailbroken kindle on 5.17.1 or later.

I would suggest that you either stay on 5.14.2 or update to 5.16.2.1.1 at most, as things get complicated after this version.

I've updated a PW5 to the latest firmware and it did get faster page turns.

Thanks mate.By "changes in the firmware.....persistence) you mean also it kills persistence of winderbreak jailbreak method on latest fw also? Btw i don't have any issue to register it (i suppose with my common amazon account with which i buy things) but i don't want amazon to track me what i read.(do they have access on internal memory also?Also probably i will never buy any of their books.In this case,can i update to latest fw,jailbreak with WB and then unregister?Also could you send me the links of old method jailbreak and fw of 5.16.2.1.1? Sorry for too many questions, but here in Greece these devices are almost not even known to most people,so just no support here.

Basically if you install 5.17.1 or later on an already jailbroken Kindle, you will lose the jailbreak. Since only WinterBreak works on those firmwares, if you want to jailbreak again, you will have to use WinterBreak, which requires registering your Kindle.

Technically Amazon would be able to see whatever books you sideload, however historically they have shown very little interest in that. Not to say it won't change but I've never heard of anyone running into issues for what they sideload.

I think you can unregister your Kindle once the jailbreak is applied but I'm not 100% sure; perhaps the hotfix will disappear from your library and you will have to put it again manually in the "Documents" folder and run it. Sorry, I'm just not sure enough to confirm this.

The PW5 has not been jailbroken. I don't know if your Kindle will be faster. The only way to know is to update the firmware.

If I was jailbreaking, I would go for WinterBreak as it's the latest jailbreak and the one most people are doing.

Thank you all guys here,your help here is priceless.I think i will register it,update it to last fw and then jailbreak it with WB.(Seemed much easier to me compared the previous jb nightmare i survived before some time) Btw jailbreak will survive if then i unregister my kindle?And in generally,will i have any limitations if i register it?

You won't have any problem registering. There's no need to remove the registration. I have my Kindles registered and I have no problem with them being registered. I do keep WiFi off.

If you use KOReader and you have KOReader turn on WiFi to update KOReader, the Kindle system won't be online. So turn off WiFi before you exit KOReader and you'll be good to go.

I want to thank everyone here! Finally all is done! So from my turn,i will give instructions on what i did,so if any newbie like me get here,he can made it like i did.So i firstly downloaded the latest fw on my kindle SD and i updated.Then i made a factory reset (optional) Then i registered the kindle.Then i just followed the instructions on the fantastic and detailed winder break web page.(Also disabled OTA) Then to my surprise,i couldn't install Koreader.Then i saw a video on youtube and i saw that since latest jailbreak/firmware,we have to install nightly Koreader.Then i followed instructions of this video and i finally installed koreader(process is much easier,because now we just paste the 2 extracted folders to the root of kindle SD.(logically now we wait a stable Koreader release for new jailbreak/firmware versions) To my surprise i also noticed faster pages turn.And maybe bit snapier overal system.Lets hope battery life also has been increased! Again thanks to all of you guys!

Probably to my worries i expressed before (in case we register a device,if amazon can track what we read) Btw i think after the update battery life is worse.But maybe this is cause of nightly builds of Koreader don't really know.. (not to blame superb Koreader oc).
