Question Is my battery reaching EoL or something else?

My 2nd hand Voyage has suddenly begun displaying the dead battery warning upon waking up. I plugged it in and it went thru its wake up routine and the battery was 39%. There's no problem unplugging it it stays on. But once I close the cover and open it again it might open to my book or it will suddenly display the dead battery symbol.

Is this a battery issue? I know its old and I don't mind changing it. Or is this something else possibly more serious going on?

Yes, your battery has had it. It needs a new battery.

The battery gauge might have drifted out of calibration. (This is common.)

Try charging it to 100% in one go.

@JPS
I'll give it a shot. Should I drain the battery before plugging it to charge?

@JSWolf
I'm actually glad this is just a dying battery and that it's possible to change it as well.

Thanks you two's

It sounds like 39% displayed is already close to 0% actual.

But if you watch it until you get a warning or the dead battery image, then charge it as high as it will go, that is also OK. Since it probably has less than new capacity and might not be able to get to 100%. If it only gets to 40 or 50% and dies after a few minutes, then it is effectively dead.

I am in agreement with this being caused by a dying battery but is there a reason that it's only happening when I close the cover? I can put it to sleep and turn screen off via power button and it hasn't come up with the battery empty symbol upon turning it back on.

Update 6:28pm 2/1
It has now also given me the dead battery icon when using the power button. It's also now at 57% when it was at 39% when I checked before putting it to sleep. I'm going to just turn it off and get a new battery asap.

My battery behaves in the same way and is very similar to your experience, with this additional issue:

I'm wondering if the lightness of text around the edges of the screen (a kind of fading of the text) is also caused by a depleted battery. Or a bad controller? Or a screen going bad? Or a short due to an ant that caused some kind of corrosion in the circuit? (Not joking.)

I could easily see the lightness of the text being affected by a low battery or because a screen is somehow failing or a loose ribbon cable connection between board and screen. If your device is crackable my first check would be the ribbon cable, testing it with a new battery, and lastly the screen. For whatever reason I'd find replacing a screen a more serious thing than replacing a battery.

Ants will happily go into random things. They've lived in my house phone one year. Another year they decided they liked the tower but not the monitor. I've found them in a drill at work too.

It's the price of the battery - during a Christmas visit in the U.S. - that kept me from buying one. And also the uncertainty that a new battery would resolve the issue.

I will always hope that when my Kindles are acting up in certain ways that it's just a battery change to fix it. I know I can swap a battery myself. I'm not too sure how I'd be with a different type of problem.
The drawback of still using these great but old devices is parts will be pricey and will only get pricier.

So looking for batteries, does anyone know of a US based supplier other than ifixit (sold out for now hopefully in stock soon) newpower99 (near double the price of ifixit but in stock).

I looked at ebay and the one I could find that was us based was sold out too. The rest were the usual Chinese manufacturer storefronts with estimated delivery dates of next month

I'll replace my battery in my voyager when it comes to that. It gives me a viable device what still supports download and transfer via usb.

If you travel with it then it must, indeed, be a 'voyager'.
