Easier Image Deletion?

Many of the books I put into Calibre are bloated with full size cover art from other books. I like to save space by deleting those pages in the Editor.

When I then run "Check Book" in the Editor, I correctly see the abandoned images as errors. For example:
Quote:
Warning [1 / 6]
OEBPS/images/597-1.jpg
This file is included in the book but not referred to by any document in the spine. This means that the file will not be viewable on most e-book readers. You should probably remove this file from the book or add a link to it somewhere.

Try to correct all fixable errors automatically

Re-run check
Selecting "correct all fixable errors" doesn't delete those stranded images. Is there an easier way to accomplish this than cross-checking through the list of images and individually deleting each image?

It gives the count.
You can right click <options>

Beware the debug messages do not always detect proper non-use of other than JPG.

Assuming your books are in epub format, you can use the Modify ePub plugin, which has a feature to delete unused images.

For books in azw3 format, the Editor Chains plugin provide a similar feature, and it can be run on multiple books if combined with the Action Chains plugin.

The thing is, before editing, those images are used. But when you removed HTML files you don't want/need, you can end up with unused images.

One other nasty is that if the images are only referenced in a CSS stylesheet which is quite common for scene break images, they will be deleted.

Cool, and I can sort that table based on Times Used to delete the zeroes. Thanks!

I use the actual Editor, then I can see what is happening. The Ladybug check icon.

Modify ePub was updated to handle images only referenced in CSS and the calibre error checker handles images only in CSS.

Interesting. I don't use that feature in Modify Epub and the last time I used bug check in the calibre editor, it listed the scene break image as unused. Admittedly, that was a while back since I prefer epubcheck to the builtin bug check.

One ePub I was editing last week had a graphic for * * * and it was specified in the CSS. I removed all of them from the CSS. Then I did a check with calibre's error checker and it did not specify that the graphic image was unused.

The change in Modify ePub to check CSS for image references was release on July 8, 2024. The same change was made in Quality Check before then. I suggest the same change in ME and it was accepted and made.
