Book covers end up in photos on Win 11

Every time I download a book and its cover to Calibre it puts a copy of the book cover in my photos file.
There are now thousands of these, can I delete them?
Is there a cover or thumbnail kept elsewhere such as in the metadata?

Do you have OneDrive enabled?

Pick a book ENTRY in Calibre: Tap 'O'
Do you see a 'cover.jpg. ? (Change nothing. Just close that explorer window)

That was where Calibre puts the covers it uses for metadata, so the others are safe to delete.

(Another reason I don't want W11. Unwanted help. )

Do you use Edge to download? change the setting in Edge: (see image)

"my photos file" — I assume that's "C:\Users\<username>\Pictures."

It will be Windows 11 or another app, not calibre.

How do you do the downloads, and where do they land?

How do you add the downloaded cover to your calibre library?

I wonder if what's happening is OneDrive is scanning for images to backup, and the folders being scanned include the location of the calibre library?

I couldn't induce it on my Win11 Surface Go which is very vanilla.

Downloaded some jpegs via Edge into %USERHOME%\Downloads. Moved them to a folder in %USERHOME%\Documents which is auto synched to my OneDrive account. Nothing showed up in %USERHOME%\Pictures.

I may have overlooked a Windows setting, but as I said they're more or less factory settings. I mainly use it to read comics, watch video clips etc.

Thanks all, I now wish I hadn't asked the question. It turned out to be OneDrive creating a copy, but also a copy of the downloaded jpg in calibre, so consequently I have the thumbnail and the cover in larger form, which one I delete is, as I've found out by trial and error, not obvious.
My best solution is to figure out some way of not seeing the covers when I look for any real photos.
I will have to find a good photo editor and learn how to mask those I don't want to see other than in Calibre
Incidentally thanks for all the responses, but I don't use Edge only Chrome, Calibre and OneDrive for backup

If you answer my questions in post #4 we can probably tell you how to prevent the extra copies that are in your OneDrive account.

If your library is in a location that OneDrive autosynchs, e.g Documents, move it to a location that OneDrive doesn't autosynch.

Don't delete the cover.jpg files in the book folders of your calibre library — they are the source of what you see in Book details, Grid view, Cover view etc.

The downloads go into either "My Kindle Content"
or the majority via ePubor converter into "C:\Users\jmcki\Ultimate" from there they are picked up via Calibre using the "Add Books" button

I don't download the cover separately, I just choose the one provided via Calibre "Download Metadata"

Over 90% of books are via Kobo
