calibre WINDOWS 64-bit 7.17.0, "E-book viewer" stuck on "Loading book..."

I have been using Calibre for years, always with great satisfaction and appreciation for its author.

Today, I updated from version 7.13 to 7.22, excited to try out its new features.

However, I found that the books get stuck on "loading" (showing the book's index in the background).

I have installed all the portable versions from 7.13 to 7.18, and everything works fine up to 7.16. The first version that doesn't work for me is 7.17.

I don't know if it's a bug or an issue with my computer (which is quite old, but otherwise I don't have any problems).

I would appreciate any suggestions or help.

Thank you very much.

Try updating your graphics drivers and also try running in safe mode. If neither of those work then I suggest you stay with 7.16 on this computer.

Calibre WINDOWS 64-bit 7.23, "E-book viewer" stuck on "Loading book..."

Dear Kovid Goyal,

Following your advice, I updated my graphics drivers. Below are the details of my graphics card and driver updates:

**GRAPHICS CARD**
- Manufacturer: NVIDIA
- Driver Description: NVIDIA GeForce GT 710
- Driver Provider: NVIDIA

**BEFORE UPDATE:**
- Driver Version: 27.21.14.5671 (GeForce 456.71)
- Driver Date: 30-Sep-2020
- DCH/UWD Driver: Not Capable

**AFTER UPDATE:**
- Driver Version: 30.0.14.7514 (GeForce 475.14)
- Driver Date: 10-Jun-2024
- DCH/UWD Driver: Capable

Additionally, I tested the same version of Calibre on Linux and Windows 10. Here are the results:
- On Linux (Deepin 23), the eBook reader works without any issues.
- On Windows 10, the viewer remains stuck and fails to open the book, although the index is visible in the background.

I hope these details are helpful in identifying and potentially resolving any underlying bugs. Thank you very much for your time and assistance.

Best regards,

Tomás J. Cantó

Hello Tomás and Kovid Goyal:

I'm stuck with the same issue, also using a Nvidia GeForce graphics card: GeForce 9600M GT on Windows 10.

Have you tried disabling the GPU with:

QTWEBENGINE_CHROMIUM_FLAGS="--disable-gpu"

For the moment, this has not seemed to work with me, but I may have entered it incorrectly.

I would appreciate any help you can offer.

Best wishes,

Brian Poole

Just stay with calibre 7.16 for the moment eventually either a GPU update or a Qt update should fix the issue. Qt shippe dwith calibre will likely be updated for calibre 8

Hello,

I just registered, first of all to say a big Thank You to kovidgoyal for all the great work he does for all of us with Calibre.

Then I am glad to report that indeed with version 8.0.1 for me all the problems described in this thread are gone. Perfect.
