I can't help you but from what I've gathered it'd probably be very wishful thinking. What I can tell you is that on the kobo you can fake register the device fairly easily and you can also install Koreader without having to jailbreak the device. Or just use the stock software which isn't bad at all honestly. In my honest opinion its much less invasive. I don't need big brother collecting telemetry on my reading tastes and habits

Please stop pushing the fake registering on a Kobo. It's been known to fail and reset everything at least twice.

Its the first I've heard of that. I fake registered mine and its worked 100% fine but I'll have a look into it. For me its either fake register or sell the device. Either way even if my stuff gets deleted I've got it backed up so that's not a big deal to me. What is a big deal is having rakuten or amazon deleting things that I've paid for on my personal device which amazon have been caught doing in the past, or locking me out of advertised features under the pretense that I register with them which is coercion and extortion, evidently another common Amazon business practice. I want to control what I've paid for and fake registering allows me to do that

Sideload mode has been an official Kobo feature for nearly 3 years. There's no need to fake register unless you insist on using an old firmware version.

No need to look into it. It's what happened. I suggest you undo your fake registration and register properly before someday you get reset. I suggest you figure out if you can undo it without losing everything. But you could lose everything when you least expect it and you are not at home to sort it out.

In regards to wanting to use an unregistered Kindle, I don't think you can skip it. You can register it then promptly sign out of your wifi and turn on airplane mode. Thats how my K3 has been for years. The dictionary and tts should still work but I'm not sure about translation on your newer device.
You can use a Kobo without registering (never ever fake register) as long as you put in the config
Code:
SideloadedMode=true
The config file is called Kobo eReader.conf and it lived in .kobo/Kobo.

Use Notepad++ if you are on Windows to keep the line endings correct.

I didn't do it that way, I actually direct injected the data into the sqlite databases themselves which manipulated the kobo into thinking its registered. It's worked perfectly up until now. Its the lesser of 2 evils because amazon have been caught out deleting content off peoples devices and employing highly predatory business tactics. Kobo I'm not too sure but I'd still rather bypass the registration just to be safe. I'm not too concerned because I have all my stuff backed up and this way I can actually control my own device, thanks for giving me the heads up though I'll have a look into it

But you have to take the rubbish out of the database as someday it will cause you to lose everything when you least expect it.

Here's what to do. Make a copy of everything on the Kobo when it's plugged into the USB port. Then log out and start over. When the new database, see what's in it and copy that it the old database getting rid of the rubbish you put in. When that is done, copy everything back to the Kobo and reboot. That should get you back up and registered and no chance of losing it all.

So if you keep the rubbish in your database, one day it will all be deleted by Kobo.

Personally, for my reading habits, I wouldn't worry about it. I only read 1 book at a time and sideload using calibre. So a "reset" is no big deal for me.

By start over do you mean I should do a factory reset?

If so the new database will be blank though, so I will be copying a blank database over unless I've misunderstood. if I remember correctly you get stuck on the registration screen until you either register or manipulate the database to think its registered. At least that's how I remembered it, I couldn't actually get past that initial registration screen until I manipulated the database. Let me know thanks mate

I don't think you'd need to factory reset. I would think a log out would be good enough.

If I had similar reading habits, I'd to dhe SideLoadMode=true.

Are kobo doing this deliberately? If so that would be highly questionable on ethical grounds

Does the sideloadmode=true actually allow you to fully bypass the registration? That's my main concern because Amazon have been caught out big time and I'm not willing to take my chances with kobo

H3ctor, I believe searching for "SideloadedMode" may help.

I don't know if Kobo is doing is deliberately of not. It could be because Kobo has changed the registration part of the database and that caused the fake registration to go south.

Have a look at this from another thread.
