Sort on publication date; Kobo app; synchronisation
I have just bought a Kobo Clara bw so please excuse the naivety of my questions - I'm just getting grips with it. I use it with Calibre.
Calibre shows me that the date of publication is included in the metadata. But I can't sort on publication date on the Clara, and there's nothing on sorting in the settings. How can I edit the sort settings or otherwise get the sort on pub date option? I haven't downloaded the Kobo app. Is it necessary or useful? I have no intention of listening to audio books, or treating the device as a notepad, and I want to use Calibre as my library manager. I have been told on this blog that the Kobo device can be synchronised to any changes made to the library (eg editing metadata). How do I set up this synchronisation and run it? (I assume the library copy is the master as calibre won't let me access the metadata of books actually on the Kobo). I assume Calibre knows which device I am connecting to it. Can I edit any device settings from Calibre? The built-in settings in the device don't seem to offer much flexibility (eg sorting, synchronisation). |

Kobo app is not necessary.
To have automatic metadata syncing, first turn it on in Calibre (Preferences - Sending books to devices - Metadata management: Automatic). Next, go to the Kobo driver settings (they're easiest to access if you install the Kobo Utilities plugin, right-click on the plugin icon and select Driver -> Configure current driver) and make sure that on the Metadata tab, Update metadata on the device is checked. There's no need to run anything - it's automatic when you connect your Kobo to Calibre. When transferring new books, it's necessary to connect twice for some things (series, for example) - first, you send the books, eject your Kobo, wait until the new books have been processed (usually a minute or two, depending on the amount - you'll see it on the screen of your Kobo) and connect again. The series information is transferred on the second connection. I don't think you can sort by publication date. However, you can make collections based on publication date in Calibre and have them transferred automatically to Kobo (again customizing the Kobo driver, Collections tab). For example, published in 1950-1959, in 1960-69 and so on, or any other combination you want. Last edited by Sirtel; 12-04-2024 at 02:07 PM. |

Many thanks. I'll give this a go and see how it works out.
