MobileRead Users 2025 TBR Reduction Challenge

The MobileRead Users 2025 TBR Reduction Challenge is now live on StoryGraph!

Please feel free to post your book lists here AND join the StorygGraph challenge if you're so inclined!

There are again two alternatives to choose from each month (or both if you're feeling feisty). The months of March, July, September, and October have had some updates.

RULES (that you can completely ignore if you want!):
  1. The book only has to make sense to you to fit into the topic for that month. If you can justify it to yourself, go for it! There are two alternatives for each month, so you have some freedom to clear out that TBR!
  2. The book should be on your TBR as we are trying to reduce TBRs, not pick new things.
  3. Books can be read in any order! The monthly themes are there as an aid to picking TBR books, but if you want to read something from the October prompt in March - go for it!
  4. Anything goes – fiction, nonfiction, graphic novels, collected comics, and anything else I haven’t thought of.
  5. Have fun! Feel free to invite another user for a buddy read if they post something interesting.

Remember - if you would like to see what books others have added to the challenge, just enter the challenge and click on the month title and it will show you all books added, with yours at the top. You add books the same way - go to the month, and you will be taken to a page where you can add books to that month's challenge.

January
  • The Leftovers – a book from your TBR you wanted read least year that you just didn't get around to reading.
  • New Beginnings - start a new series, new to you author, or book that you got for the holidays (something new to your TBR).

February
  • St. Valentines - A book by an author you love or a genre you love.
  • Shortest Book - Read the shortest/smallest book on your TBR, irrespective of any other topic.

March
  • International Women’s Day - A book by and/or about women, women’s rights, or gender equality.
  • St. Patrick’s – A book that can in some way be associated with “green.” Bonus if it is related to St. Patrick or Ireland in some way.

April
  • April Showers - a book about rain, weather, spring, or something new – try a new author or series (bonus if its weather related!)
  • April Fools - read the silliest or most foolish book on your TBR. Can be the title, subject, cover or just your perception that it being on your TBR list at all is silly.

May
  • Ovid's May - Ovid tells us the month of May was named for the maiores, Latin for "elders." Read something old, or a book about something or someone old.
  • Mayday! - a book that you think you might bail out on, or a book about emergencies, panics or escapes.

June
  • Beached - read a book about the ocean, maritime life, coasts, or something sea-related. Bonus if it’s also fishy in some way.
  • Fixed or Broken - read a book about things/people/places/galaxies being fixed and/or broken.

July
  • Independents – A book you got via your local indie bookseller or bought used. Library loans count too!
  • FREE SPACE – Any book from your TBR for any reason!

August
  • When I Grow Up - a fiction or nonfiction title about a career you dreamed of as a child. Can also be about a common career even if you had no interest in it. Bonus if you went into that career!
  • Back to School - a book from your TBR that has something to do with schools, education (or something you bought to educate yourself about something)

September
  • Brevity - a book with a one-word title, a collection of short stories, or a short drama.
  • Seasonal - a book from your TBR that is wholly or partially set in or about the season it is in your part of the world (or an associated holiday/event).

October
  • Masks - a book from your TBR about people wearing masks, hiding, or masquerading as something they are not.
  • Mysteries – a book from your TBR that is shrouded in mystery (of any kind!)

November
  • Indigenous - a book from your TBR by, about, or telling the story of an indigenous population or person. Bonus if it is someone/something from your own country's history.
  • Families – a book from your TBR about families (real or imagined, inherited or found)

December
  • Endings – Continue or finish a book or series that has been lingering for a long time.
  • Gifted – a book about something or someone who is gifted (in any sense of the word) or a book you were gifted.

My big takeaway from last year is that while the challenge did help me to read books from my TBR, I still continued the toxic cycle of buying new books - actually more books that I can read. I have bought about 80 books last year and only read 3-4 of them.

So I'll try to find only books I've bought in 2024 or books I've bought in 2011 (according to Kindle these were my first ebooks) on my challenge for 2025. Besides that, I'll try to read 80% of all books I'll inevitably buy next year to prevent what I did this year.

I'm so excited for the new prompts. I look forward to doing these every year.

I've added to all the prompts. The ones I could change my mind on are July's and December's. The rest I should be set.

I've made a bingo card for the challenge. If anyone else wants to use it, you can copy it here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1...it?usp=sharing

Like this year, I'll ignore the months and the TBR aspect, but try to get as many of the prompts as I can. For that use, a bingo card is nice

I think I have pretty much settled on a list. I think Storygraph sees 2 books on a prompt as an "or" selection, but my intention is to read both, as most of my selections are rather short books.

My partner helped me pick a few books, The Time Traveler's Wife, Demian and One Hundred Years of Solitude are actually their suggestions, and I'm excited to read a few books outside my usual reading bubble.

What a great idea!! I’m joining the challenge and I’ve added my books to all the prompts!

I have followed the following rules:

- The book must be on my TBR
- It has to be one of the paper books that I already own or it has to be available in our local library. No buying!!!

I'm trying to be more ruthless about not ADDING books to my TBR to then add to my TBR reduction challenge, so I've only entered the first few prompts so far. Gonna have to get creative for some of the other prompts, but there's also a srong chance that I will be acquiring books that might fit anyway. Only 4 prompts to fill now

Does the Storygraph Challenge let me participate in the 2025 one when I haven't completed the 2024 one?

My reading time disappeared for the last few months because of moving house, so I was planning to include the four books from this year that didn't get read into the 2025 challenge. At this stage I can't see a Challenge for 2025.

If I can't do it, I can always just list them here.

Thanks again for doing this, astrangerhere.

Yes. Other than writing "I must not be tardy" 500 times in your own blood, there is no other penalty for not completing a TSG challenge.
