Lightbulb Seeking: Sony Daily Edition PRS-950

I'm new to eReaders but was inspired to switch from physical. After doing a LOT of research, I narrowed my choices down and the Sony Daily PRS-950 (over the 900) was the clear winner. Yet, I am unable to find it, even on eBay!

Does anyone have one - preferably in good working order! - that are willing to part for it? I'm ready to ditch reading on my phone and laptop for good!

That was released in August 2010 !!!

The battery will be shot, the screen is old technology, it will be slow as hell. And Sony has essentially abandoned the ebook market.

I HIGHLY recommend you buy something used that is more recent.

If you can recommend me something that is at least 6.8", WITHOUT any lighting, I'm all ears. The only other others I've found, that exist like that, are the Sony's PRS-900 & 950 and the Kindle DX (9.7").

You won't find a Reader without a light that's not too old, too slow, and probably have a battery that's had it.

Why don't you want a light? I find the light useful at times. I used to have Sony Readers with light covers and they did not work nearly as well as the front light we have now.

The PRS-900 has a screen that looks like a mirror. It's terrible.
The 950 is old, slow, low-res, battery is not going to be any good (this apply also to the 900).
The DX is also a disaster. It's old, slow, can only handle Mobi, heavy, low-res, battery is not going to be any good.

So you either go with a new Reader with a light or you go back to reading paper.

You can turn the light off on most (if not all) modern eink readers.

Many don't like that the light layer blurs the screen. If you never plan on using it, then you are better off with a display that doesn't have the light layer.

Except that those devices are 12 or more years old by now. Can't really recommend anything so ancient.

A Reader where the light layer is blurring the screen is too old to be of any real use. Current Readers are OK with a light layer.

As far as I know, the light layer is still imprinted with tiny patterns to affect refraction so that the light is more uniform over the whole display. These patterns will affect the sharpness of the text to some degree. My vision isn't the best, so I prefer having the light layer, but many people with much better eyesight can see that the text is blurrier.

I expect that ereaders with Mobius displays are likely to not have the light layer (because it doesn't work well when the screen isn't flat). Searching for such ereaders may produce something a lot newer than a Sony 950.

The Kobo Forma certainly had both the Mobius screen and the light layer.

I did a quick search and found new large ereaders (10"+) with Mobius displays and no light layer. They are out there.

It needs to be under $150, going by the OP's other thread. I'm guessing those 10'' devices are a lot more expensive.

They definitely are more expensive than $150.
