Downgrade a jailbroken kindle from 5.16.21
Hi. I have managed to successfully jailbreak my kindle paperwhite 11th gen which was on 5.16.2.1.1 version and installed Kual and KOreader, but it got updated to 5.16.21 overnight as I mistakenly didn’t install ota update block. Kual fails to launch now but as the device is still jailbroken, is there any chance of downgrading it to the previous version of 5.16.2.1.1 to install koreader again?

Did you reinstall KUAL after that firmware update?
As for downgrade in cases where you don't have working KUAL but still have functional " ;log runme" search bar command read this topic: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...90#post4422490 It comes down to instruction to use this RUNME.sh script to prepare for downgrade by doing that necessary version number edit. And then over USB cable copy the old firmware and then forceing a device reboot without first ejecting / unmounting from computer . Last edited by shamanNS; 10-23-2024 at 07:06 AM. |

![]() ![]() Thanks for your kind help. I am facing the same situation. My device (Kindle Scribe) was jailbroken on 5.16.2, but it was upgraded to 5.16.21 through firmware ![]() For example, the "VER" value of other devices is: “Kindle Paperwhite (11th Generation) - 378310 Kindle Oasis (10th Generation) - 355615 Kindle (10th Generation) - 352856 Kindle Paperwhite (10th Generation) - 336034 Kindle Oasis (9th Generation) - 325069 Kindle (8th Generation) -298743 Kindle Oasis (8th Generation) - 288285 Kindle Paperwhite (7th Generation) - 263413 Kindle Voyage (7th Generation) - 244367 Kindle (7th Generation) - 244369 Kindle Paperwhite (6th Generation) - 206145 ” I haven't seen it in other people's discussions either. I also did not see my device model in the "menu.json" file of the "actual Downgrader 2.0 KUAL extension". According to my testing, the device is still in jailbroken state and the 'log mrpi' function should be normal. I tried reinstalling KUAL, but it still doesn't work properly, so I chose to downgrade. I tried using "336034" and KindleScribe's 5.16.2 firmware, but the upgrade displayed "Update Error: 12", does that mean it won't allow downgrading? ![]() PS, is it risky to downgrade from 5.16.21 to 5.16.2? Does anyone else tried. ![]() ![]() |

Thank you for your kind help. I am facing the same situation. My device (Kindle Scribe) was jailbroken on 5.16.2, but now it was upgraded to 5.16.21 through firmware. KUAL cannot function properly after upgrading. So I decide to downgrad kindle,But I encountered difficulties when using 'runme. sh' method to downgrade because my device is Kindle Scribe and I cannot find its" VER"value.
For example, the "VER" value of other devices is: “Kindle Paperwhite (11th Generation) - 378310 Kindle Oasis (10th Generation) - 355615 Kindle (10th Generation) - 352856 Kindle Paperwhite (10th Generation) - 336034 Kindle Oasis (9th Generation) - 325069 Kindle (8th Generation) -298743 Kindle Oasis (8th Generation) - 288285 Kindle Paperwhite (7th Generation) - 263413 Kindle Voyage (7th Generation) - 244367 Kindle (7th Generation) - 244369 Kindle Paperwhite (6th Generation) - 206145 ” I haven't seen it in other people's discussions either. I had success downgrading Kindle Scribe from 5.16.21 to 5.16.2.0.1 using this downgrader: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...&postcount=469

@jarviloo "Downgrader 2.0" KUAL extension (where all those value were originally listed) was created and last updated at a time when Scribe didn't exist, so it is totally expected for it not to cover doing that edit for Scribe...
Anyways, those numbers were taken from here (usually value form the first /the oldest firmware build was used by Downgrader extension): https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/custo...deId=200203720 So if you scroll that page you'll see this: Code:

uh,I cant see my reply immediately, not sure if it has been sent.
In brief , >I put bin&runme.sh into the kindle root directory and input ";log runme" at seach bar. > then I put 5.16.2.bin&runme.sh into the kindle root directory, then long press the power button to enter the upgrade before disconnecting the USB connection. it shows "Update Error: 12"。 |

You emphasized 'Before using that RUNME.sh script you must first edit it to use the correct version code value for your Kindle model', but I didn't edit it. I think the 'Kindle model' you emphasized should be 'VER=336034' in the file, and its not compatible with my KS.

You're not doing thing correctly.
1) You need to first copy only RUNME.sh (with edited version number) to the root of your Kindle. Then eject from computer. 2) into Kindle's search bar you type in ;log runme and click on the arrow? icon on the right side of the search bar to execute the command. Couple of seconds later Kindle should reboot / restart itself. 3)after Kindle boot back to homescreen connect it again to your computer with USB cable. Now you copy 5.16.2.bin update file and you don't eject / unmount the Kindle after copying the bin file is done, instead while it is still plugged into your computer you press and hold for 20 seconds the power button on your Kindle, to trigger a forced reboot. On reboot the update install should trigger and successfully install. While copying older bin installer file check and make sure there aren't any other bin files in root of the Kindle drive. At least this is a procedure for other Kindle models, not sure if Scribe using MTP protocol has any influence. On other Kindle models if you eject / unmount the Kindle drive Kindle detects and deleted the older firmware bin. So you need to do that "force reboot via power button" trick in order to stop Kindle from "processing and deleting" the old firmware bin file. Last edited by shamanNS; 10-25-2024 at 07:39 PM. |
