Kindle Paperwhite 2024 compatibility
Amazon has launched a raft of new devices, with a 7-inch Paperwhite, a new 6-inch Basic, the incoming Colorsoft and a (supposedly) upgraded Scribe. I'm thinking of getting the new Paperwhite, but don't know if it's compatible with Calibre. Apparently the file explorer on Macs doesn't work with the new PW, which leaves me concerned about Calibre as well.

I also had a problem at first with covers displaying in the library on the new Paperwhite, but I was running an older version of Calibre. Updating to 7.20 fixed that. |

Since the new Paperwhite models have an MTP connection similar to the one that the Scribe was given in a firmware update, calibre should be able to connect to it using OpenMTP (just remember unlike an USB connected Kindle ereader, a MTP connected Kindle ereader on MacOS and Linux only allows one connection).

My new PW Gen 12 arrived today, but I can't get it to show up in Calibre. I have OpenMTP and that's all working absolutely fine, with no other MTP devices plugged in. Do I need to have MTP open for Calibre to recognise the device, or not? Does Calibre need to be open before I plug in the device with MTP, or not? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Update: I clicked the refresh icon on OpenMTP, un-plugged and re-plugged the Kindle, and closed and re-opened Calibre, and whatever bit of that worked seems to have done the trick. Last edited by Waylander; 10-25-2024 at 12:09 PM. |

Do not use openmtp and calibre at the same time. On linux/macos only ONE program can access a MTP device at a time.

Thanks for the correction. I was under the impression from a previous thread about connecting a Scribe using MTP to a Mac, that you needed to use OpenMTP.

No both openmtp and calibre use libmtp to access mtp devices. On Windows, the OS manages mtp devices and multiplexes them for client software. On non-windows OSes libmtp speaks the mtp protocol directly over the usb port and so only a aingle program can so so at a time.

For some reason when I connect my PW6 it now isn't showing up in Calibre, even though OpenMTP isn't running. When I press the "disconnect" icon on the device's screen, Calibre gives this error message:
calibre, version 7.20.0 ERROR: Error: Error communicating with device Failed to get storage info for device. Traceback (most recent call last): File "calibre/gui2/device.py", line 112, in run File "calibre/gui2/device.py", line 532, in _get_device_information File "calibre/devices/mtp/base.py", line 24, in synchronizer File "calibre/devices/mtp/unix/driver.py", line 358, in free_space libmtp.MTPError: Failed to get storage info for device. I'm confused as to why Calibre recognised the device yesterday but isn't detecting it today. Update: it seems that it takes some time for the PW6 to be recognised by Calibre. I opened Calibre, plugged in the Kindle, without OpenMTP open as per instructions, waited a bit and it showed up. Last edited by Waylander; 10-26-2024 at 12:23 PM. |

It's important to start Calibre first and then connect the device, not the other way around.

That seems to be where I was going wrong, for which apologies; A kindle using MTP is not something I'm used to.

For some reason my PW6 is refusing to show up in Calibre. I make sure that Calibre is open before I plug the PW6 in, and OpenMTP is not open. Yet the device is not showing up on Calibre. I'm not sure why this isn't working.

Also make sure to Quit OpenMTP (command+Q or the menu) and not just close the app window, which leaves it running. |
