2024 Shops Poll
It's been at least a few years since a poll like this. Which ebook shop(s) do you use?

Any store whose ebooks can be deDRMed - Amazon, Google, Kobo are the main ones for me. B&N doesn't sell ebooks outside the US, so I've never bought from them.

I used to Baen Books, but my tastes or they shifted their offerings from the Webscriptions era (Jim Baen at the helm)

A few authors I read have either started or upgraded their own direct selling websites, which is a trend I hope continues. It's nice to think most of what I pay actually does go to the author

I read far too many authors to seek out their individual websites. I've done it sometimes, but generally it would take too much time, as there are hundreds of them.

I buy mainly from Amazon and the Danish bookstore Saxo.com. I have used Ebooks and Kobo a few times.

Almost always from Amazon. A few direct from publishers (recently Rebellion and Black Library). I have a Kobo account, too, but I haven't bought a book from them since 2019 so I left them off.
I have just realised though, that my second biggest source after Amazon is bundles: Humble Bundle and StoryBundle and the like. It doesn't look like I can edit my vote to include Other. |

I was buying from Barnes & Noble until they discontinued the Nook for Windows app and my computer died. I can no longer liberate my Nook books, so back to Amazon.

This poll seems to show that MobileRead members are not representative.

Mostly Amazon except for books published from 2023 onwards when I buy from Kobo or smashwords. Exceptionally I will buy from google or ebooks.com

A lot of the indie authors I read sell through Smashwords, among other shops, and that's my preferred one to buy from for those authors. It seems a much better deal for the author.

Yes, the author I buy the most, whom I discovered on Kobo several years ago, now sells on Smashwords too, and I buy her work there now instead of from Kobo

I often buy from a small publisher (Piccadilly Publishing). They publish through Smashwords and Smashwords then uploads the files to Kobo. Should I buy their stuff directly through Smashwords? Does the publisher get to keep a larger percentage of the funds that way? |
