No touch - Water on your screen? message
Hello everybody,
I have two Aura H2O. Both got totally stuck. So I opened them up to see the SD card shifted. I created a new SD card from an image (Thanks again David!) but on booting they both gave me the error "Water on Screen?" and there is no more touch. To be clear there is no water on screen and they never were in water Anybody has an idea? Multiple reboots (and to the "critical error - Factory reset?" screen, but no touch ... At the moment they are not in the case, but I don't think thus has anything to do with this (?) Thx 4 your help/feedback/ideas!! |

Misalignment of the bezel. It's an IR light pipe putting beams across the screen. The PCB has IR LEDs and photo-transistors. The black is transparent to infrared and the bumps are some kind of lenses.
Also the touch thus won't work at all if the unit isn't assembled in the case! Later models use capacitive touch which makes the screen slightly dimmer but otherwise has less problems. |

Have you tried disabling water detection: Reading Settings, page 2?

The problem for the OP with the IR touch screen is not going to allow them to disable water detection since they state that there is no more touch. They could edit the Kobo eReader.conf file but until the bezel alignment is corrected, that would not be helpful.

Obviously if the bezel isn't assembled you can't change any settings anyway. |

With this model (and most IR based touch made by anyone) the screen does not sense touch at all ever. You are blocking invisible IR light beams just above the surface that are fed and received via the bezel acting as a light pipe to IR LEDs and photo transistors on the PCB. Visible LEDs (if fitted) will be for a layer on the screen for a front light. Older gadgets with IR touch don't have illumination LEDs.

Since the OP had the Aura H2O open and had re-imaged the µSD card, it would be moderately simple to edit Kobo eReader.conf after mounting the card in their computer. Please note that what I might consider simple after a career in electronics and IT may not be considered simple to others.

Thanks. I think I'd only use that for tests, not general use as some chargers confuse Kobos.

Pretty much how I use it. When I'm sitting at the computer and going to be connecting/disconnecting multiple times, I toggle it on from NickelMenu and then toggle off when I'm done.
