Unhappy disappointed that v 7 for mac doesn't support monterey

I must say I am disappointed that the latest version does not support Monterey. It's only been 2 years since it has been released, and 1 year since Ventura. (There are many good reasons not to upgrade for some https://www.reddit.com/r/MacOS/comme...ro_2019_worse/ and the new features are really not worth it IMHO)

I kind of hoped that Calibre would have had more of a shelf life...

Can you upgrade to the latest MacOS? Is so, then there's no reason you can't run calibre 7.

switch to windows, and calibre will run on a nine year old OS release. If you want to use macOS deal with apple's incessant upgrade treadmill.

Also I think Apple is prioritising their own ARM rather than Intel now.
Last calibre for 32 bit Windows or Linux is 5.44. Last 32 bit Linux Mint was 19.3.
Mint 20.x was 64 bit only (released 2020 and supported till 2025). Even my older than 10 year old laptops/Desktops are on Linux Mint 21.2 as there is no performance penalty or issues.

I don't know what the oldest 64 bit Linux is for x86-64 that runs Calibre 7, but I think most x86-64 Intel Mac can run Linux, but you'll not have any official MS Office support (2007 mostly works on WINE, 2003 works better) but native LibreOffice is best for Linux.

Windows 11 is fussier about HW than Win10, which needs a higher spec than Linux, but Win10 still supported and best for business/corporate applications such as payroll, accounts, Local MSOffice, SAP, Adobe.

You can try Linux on your mac for free. Not sure if will run from USB like is possible with non-Mac x86-64 and ARM. There is Linux on ARM longer than MAC OS or Windows. UNIX was on ARM in 1987 (Archimedes, alternative to RiscOS).

The better solution is to upgrade the OS if that's possible. As we know, old versions of Windows 10 won't run calibre 6 (and probably not calibre 7). They have to be upgraded to the latest version.

Jon, read the post. It's an Apple Mac (maybe Intel) and the newer MacOS is optimised for Apple's own ARM and comes with "issues". Running Calibre 6.29 might be better than upgrading MacOS for some people.

What applies to Windows versions is irrelevant to Mac OS versions. Also really only 32 bit Win10 is a Win10 issue (yes it existed, I had it here!). Any 64 bit Windows 10 should be fixable for Calibre 7 without "upgrade" to Windows 11 (which might cause issues or not work, which may be why Win11 uptake is low compared to what Win10 was).

Disclaimer, the last MacOS I used much was 9!

That's talking about the Sonoma upgrade. Is there a reason you can't run Ventura? Calibre 7 is running perfectly well on that here.

It reads as thought he OP doesn't want to upgrade because of some Reddit posts.

You missed my point. Older versions of Windows 10 do not work with calibre 6. They have to be new enough. Some people just don't bother to update because they thing everything is working. This has nothing to do with Windows 11.

yes, it's an intel. That is part of the problem. As another wrote, apple is throwing intel users under the bus. Is there any particular feature of the ventura or sonoma that is critical to Calibre's new features that prevent it from having been able to be compatible? Upgrading (either ventura or above) is not a *favored* option for me for the reasons in the article and other articles, as well as the simple fact that I don't particularly have any interest in the supposed improvements that they offer (and there are some drawbacks). I don't fault Calibre for needing to be able to run on the latest OS, but am disappointed it seemed necessary to do so in a way that also throws us under the bus. Somewhat like having to buy a new car because the CD player doesn't work anymore and the car makers are having a pi****ng contest.

Ah so Apple is throwing you under a bus and instead of being disappointed with Apple you are here complaining about calibre, expecting me to do endless amounts of work trying to get approximately 100 dependencies and calibre itself to work on a whole range of OS releases from a trillion dollar company that cares nothing about backward compatibility or its users. I have better things to do with my time, thank you very much.

The version of Qt calibre 7 uses does not build without a certain version of xcode and xcode which is from the afore mentioned trillion dollar company requires certain versions of macOS to run.

Now it *may* be possible to build all of qt which includes all of chromium and all the other ~100 dependencies of calibre on Ventura in a way that it *might* run on versions of macOS older than ventura, but then I would need to run those versions and test on them those OSes and I am not going to do that. I can commit to supporting *current* macos releases which thanks to apple means about two releases at a time. Beyond that, feel free to build calibre and its dependencies yourself. Or maybe, just maybe, ditch apple for a company that cares about you.

I apologize. I was not attempting to criticize you or the work you do, which has been amply and justly praised. I am merely disappointed that it is the case. I appreciate your explanation of the reason behind it, and I get that you are constrained by the circumstances. I wasn't trying to imply YOU were throwing us under the bus (you've never done before), merely that the confluence of events is doing so. (I said "seemed" because I didn't know the reasons behind it.) You may now, as they say in TeX, \relax.

Yeah I feel for you being forced to update OS every year or two is very annoying, but that's the way the Apple ecosystem works. It's simply too much effort in building complex software to try to fight against the tide and provided longer backward compatibility timelines than the base ones from the OS.
