Clara 2E Malfunctioning Clara 2E resetting reading process after being ejected

Need help with my malfunctioning Clara 2e. A few days ago I noticed that it reset my reading progress on my existing books after having done a manual backup of it and ejected it as usual. My highlights were still there however when I looked inside the books. Beyond the reset reading progress the books were displayed out of order. The next time I connected my e-reader, sideloaded a book and ejected my drive it happened again: my reading progress was reset. The only way to get my progress in a book was to find the latest highlight.

I finally updated my reader to 4.38 in the hopes that maybe an update would have addressed the issue. After that the reader inexplicably had the last few weeks or so of latest book additions (I sideload all my books) missing. I was panicking. It was exactly like my reader is displaying what I read a month ago. I rebooted it and nothing new happened. It was only after ejecting the reader from my computer later on that the present day e-reader from before appeared, but again with reading progress reset.

Any thoughts on what’s going on and what I can do to rectify it… For now I’ll try and avoid connecting it to my computer but since I get my ebooks from the library via ADE I can’t do that for ever. It’s now resetting my reading progress every time I eject it.

I never got sync with calibre to work so really want to avoid clean install if I can since that would mean losing many of my highlights. I only sideload.
