A fresh take on the Calibre logo
I love Calibre and every time I fire it up, I look at the logo and think it would deserve a bit of love after all these years.
So, in all modesty, I took a few minutes to slightly refresh its looks. I tried to stay as close as possible to Caleb Avery's and Kamil Tatara's original design. Pretty much the same colors, fonts and general style. So this is not a complete overhaul, more like I cleaned up the dust from a logo that I see every single day. If the team of contributors and you guys like it, I ask for nothing in return but two thumbs up! ![]() You can use it freely as much as you want. This is a .png version with a transparent background (hi-res attached), but if you're interested, I could provide the vector file for you to play with. Enjoy and long live Calibre! PS: Sorry, I first posted this in the development section, if a mod could delete the other thread. ![]() |

I don't see this working when it's reduced down to the size of an icon on the task bar.

If there's any interest, we could start working on alternative versions, like a task bar icon (probably on the "C"?), a high-res icon, 1-color, without subtext, etc. |

That a No for me. A angry No.
Is kind of you, but this proposal is just (another) flat version of the actual. Personality: 0. The actual one is very good. The actual Calibre text is great: is gilded, shiny, raised, looks like it's made of gold, sweet. Yours... is just a flat yellow... And for the task bar (which is also the main logo), you propose to replace the historical 4-book side-by-side, as if it were stored on a shelf which corresponds perfectly to Calibre's library function, by a poor letter accompanied by a small book so stylized that I had to look twice to understand its meaning... No. No no. Forgive my colelery, but: A hate this trend of flattering logo, refusing to create detail and personality. We don't need flattering. Flatterers think we're incapable of retaining and recognizing shape with a little of complexity. That we're dump morons, in fact. IS TOTALLY WRONG. We are capable of identifying the face of another human being. 500 different faces according to some scientists. A logo doesn't need to be simple; it needs to be iconic, identifiable at a glance. And if we can add a few details and embellishments to give it depth and personality, all the better. And your proposal don't do that. It just erases all personality and individuality, and makes it look like any others flat logo, without standing out in any other way. In fact, I'll be even more precise in my anger: Calibre has already had a Flattering. In version 2.71, I remember it because I didn't like it at first. But I'm forced to admit that it made sense, because before Calibre didn't use logos and icons, but images that were too complex for what they symbolized. What you're doing here is OVERflattering. Beyond what's necessary. Last edited by un_pogaz; 10-09-2023 at 02:40 PM. |

"A angry No", really?
Wow, I didn't think I'd raise such visceral anger by suggesting we slightly clean up the logo (which would actually need a complete makeover, IMHO). I purposely kept it as close as possible to the original one. I meant it as a kind gesture. I won't argue about your view on what a logo should or should not be (even though I very strongly disagree). If you don't like it, fine, but please let's not turn this into an existential crisis. I'll keep on using Calibre and will focus on other things more important than its logo (or the fuss one can make about it). PS: Gotta say, kind of ironic that your own "avatar/logo" happens to be a flat and simple illustration, but whatever.... Peace. |

Why I don't find myself feeling any anger over your proposed change, neither do I have any love towards your suggested logo. I've gotten used to the calibre 4 books logo and prefer it to the calibre logo used on the web page and installer. I'm not a big fan of change for the sake of change and at this time, your suggested logo don't offer any advantages in terms of usability and is overly reminiscent of old calibre logos.

Add 1 more to the 'It was not broken / confusing" so why change it crowd.
IMHO way too many try and attract new users be 'updating' their image and alienating the existing ones. Go Bud Lite ![]() ![]() Calibre is about Books. The 6 book logo (there are 2 thin ones), conveys that. OTOH the proposal has a fan of pages. Nice, but not books. One thing a long time logo conveys is: "I've been around since your Grand Pa's time. I will be here for your Grand Kids". |

To my eyes, the current calibre logo (version 3??) used for the application has 4 books.

Again, my point was not to change the logo. I was just trying to remove some dust from it.
So yeah, maybe I shouldn't have messed around with the original concept and incorporate a new book symbol. Sorry. But hey, just for fun, here's the old one with only the crappy gradient faux-3D effect removed. I even kept the 80's flashy colors. Now come on, even flattening-haters will admit this ain't too shabby! ![]() I'll let someone else have a go at the 4-book version... |
