recommendations for ereader

Hi, all. I'm really tired of trying to find information on all the options available out there, so hopefully you'all can give me some recommendations for the best ebook reader.

I have an old Franklin eBookMan, which worked fine, I guess, until the page turner wheel died and now have to use the stylus. Also, I've started buying more books electronically instead of paper and the read on the eBookMan isn't the greatest.

What I'd really like to see is a reader that is rechargeable, reads different formats (or can convert), is paperback size for transport, able to download content from my laptop and doesn't cost a gazillion dollars.

Too much to ask??

I'm really not looking for a lot of bells and whistles--doesn 't have to be color, though backlighting is good, don't need to see pictures, just really want book pages. Any help would be appreciated.

I've looked at the Kindle but really don't like the idea of a product only available from one company (plus the waiting list and the cost of Kindle formatted books). Sony is looking like the best bet but would really like a less expensive option. What about handheld PDA's? Screens too small for books??

Where do you live? You can find the Sony PRS 505 on sale for $250 in the US.
