Boox Tab Mini C review

The only negatives, according to the review? Apple people might not like it, and it is 'not ideal' for video (duh).

Is it likely to be any better than the PocketBook offerings?

I had to admire "not ideal for video watching" in the Cons portion of the review. I haven't see a video on the Tab Mini C but I have seen an attempt to watch a YouTube video on a Tab Ultra C and it was not a pleasant experience at 6.9 frames per second which is below the claimed 8-9 FPS.

Sure, it's not as zippy as an iPad, but keep in mind that this is an e-ink device. You're not going to play all the hottest games on it, and watching video on it — while possible — is somewhat silly.

Where did you get these values from? I get 15-16 FPS on my Boox Tabs in Ultrafast.

I'll stick to LCD & OLED etc for anything other than reading.

I don't go to the beach without my e-reader, my computer, my tablet and my hi-fi system. Comfort comes first when it comes to sunbathing

I don't live in Spain but I have 4 gardens - including 1 conservatory - where I like to be and work.
And there is a lot of sun.

Mono eink is fine in the sun. But I'll keep in the shade if outside. Though rain is more common.

I'd go to beach to walk, swim or see rock pools. Or even sail if offered. Far more pleasant and cheaper to use all those gadgets at home. However woods are closer. I'd take my camera which was picked because it's a DSLR with a real eyepiece / viewfinder. A "mirrorless" DSLR is a contradiction and the fake OLED viewfinder, while better than a rear screen, can't compete yet with a mirror (when I bought), maybe getting better.

Just some comparison, e-ink, transflective LCD from Garmin and MIP screen on a watch. All on sunny day without backlight. I can't understand using OLED on watches. And I'd like to get a phone with a screen like Garmin GPS.

I too can think of other things to do with the Onyx Boox Tab Mini C and not just watch YouTube videos. And with my Tolino Page, which cost me €18, I can read e-books as cheaply as possible. In the end all simplification leads to caricature (whether on a beach, in the mountains, or on an e-reader).

Since we're all talking outdoors, let me add my complaint.
None of the Onyx have GPS although it is built into all of the Qualcomm processors and they'd only need to add a crappy PCB or sticker antenna. A ceramic antenna would be great.

It's especially criminal that the new "phone-like" Palma does not have GPS.

My Nokia phone in 2007 had a trans-reflective screen and was fine in direct sunlight.

It would be a nice device if it were remade into a phone. I think it's just the first step of actually making a phone - Onyx knows there's a market for one, especially if Hisense actually has left the game.

The Palma is a prototype unit. And the final version will likely be different.

I also heard from an Onyx representative in the Russian market Onyx telegram group that they're planning to release another smartphone sized ereader later in July. More budget friendly and without the camera.

I will buy it if it ends up being a slightly better A9 with Google Play.
