Kindle Firmware 5.16.2.1
New firmware release for the 7th gen Paperwhite and all 8th gen through 11th gen Kindles. (Not the Kindle Scribe.)

I think it's really cool that the Paperwhite 3th(7th) is still getting updates. I thought update support for it was only until 2022

This release appears to primarily be a consolidation of changes to the reading software from the Scribe firmware. It includes things like drawing and notebook handling (all inactive), but not the hardware drivers needed for pen support.

This was likely done so that Amazon does not have to manage different code bases for different models.

Did they backport the Scribe feature "Don't allow the user to skip registration" ?

I updated my PW5 and the only difference I saw was a new icon for notes. Epubs sent by Send to Kindle are still converted to azw3, not KFX. Perhaps this is unique to Scribe because of sticky notes?

Book covers in the library continue to have a low resolution.

Perhaps I should have expressed myself better. The new firmware has a lot of code copied from the Kindle Scribe but it is not enabled on other Kindles.

Thanks for the answers. I still think this will be an awesome combination (scribe for home and Kindle Basic for anywhare) but amazon doesn´t see that...

Amazon is focused on selling stuff. Kindles help sell ebooks.

There should be another firmware update coming real-soon-now.

From a quick look, I think this firmware intentionally doesn't patch certain things in order to avoid
providing the attack vectors against the Scribe.

On the Scribe (5.16.2), there isn't a "Setup Later" button on the WIFI selection screen during the *first boot*.

If you want to use a Scribe without contacting Amazon, it's complicated.

However, the OOBE code for the Scribe still has the 'SETUP_LATER' code path too, just like 5.16.2.1 does.

Perhaps there's another "hold this" type thing like for Demo to enable it.
