How to add chapter name for display on eReader status bar?
I'm trying to format an old paperback into an ePub using Sigil. Everything so far looks great, but the chapter name isn't showing up correctly on the status bar on my Kobo eReader.
I've attached an image of an unrelated book that has the desired formatting I'm trying to get. |

That’ll be reader dependent and it’s hard to guess where it’s pulling that from, though I’d start with making sure the chapter title exists between the <title> tags in the head of the HTML document for each chapter. An easy way to get it there is to first populate the TOC using Sigil’s TOC tool, then run the Access-Aide plugin.

As has been said: Reader (device) dependent AND configuration of said device as well.
For Kobo from the main screen: More; reader settings (and that is only for Progress) I think that (chapter name) is pulled from the TOC (NCX) during the 'Processing' phase when adding. Other devices do it differently (if at all). My K4 only displays title (from the metadata and I used the Calibre Plugboard to insert series#. |

How eReaders and Sigil Determine Chapter/Section Names
eReaders rely on up to three sources when naming a chapter or section. Not in order of priority, they check the file name, go to the <title> tag, and for a heading tag — from <h1> down to <h5>.
Sigil's Quirks (and Why You Might Want to Switch) Sigil is brittle as opposed to being buggy — and you get what you pay for, which is free. If you can spare the money, seriously consider upgrading to Jutoh for $45. It'll save you from these headaches coming back to bite you in unexpected ways down the road. That said, here's what's actually going on inside Sigil: Sigil reads the <h1> tag first — not the <title> tag. Contrary to what many guides say, Sigil uses <h1> as its primary source for the chapter or section name, not <title>. Counterintuitive, but true. Multiple <h1> tags will confuse it. If a single file contains more than one <h1>, Sigil doesn't know which one to use and falls back to labeling the section "Untitled Section N." Lower-level headings (<h2> through <h5>) can also cause problems. When Sigil encounters these, it sometimes can't determine the appropriate name for the section and again defaults to "Unknown Section N." The Fix Keep each HTML or XHTML file focused: one heading tag per file. When each chapter or section file contains only a single heading, Sigil has no ambiguity about what to call it — and you'll stop seeing those generic "Unknown Section" labels. |

All of that could have been said without implying that Sigil is "brittle" (and without suggesting Sigil is doing anything wrong or counterintuitive). You're also flat-out-wrong on some of your points. Sigil's methods for creating a nav/toc have very little to do with how various readers might display things. Sigil is also happy to let folks edit the nav/toc AFTER it has been automatically created if the user needs something different than what Sigil does by default.
To top it all off ... you're replying to a thread that's been dead for 3 years. Please don't necropost. Last edited by DiapDealer; 04-21-2026 at 02:55 PM. |

Seems like just a spam ad for Jutoh? Especially since this is a necro post. And especially since Sigil is not "brittle" and how Sigil operates has nothing to do with that old issue. And it is obvious the user has never bothered to use Sigil's Edit TOC capabilities. Or even use Sigil at all.
If this necro-posting of spam for Jutoh continues, should "fixerupper" be banned from MR? Or at least from the Sigil forum? He is just spewing crap. Plus he just joined today and has made only 1 post, this one. My guess he is a shill for Jutoh looking for a place to post his "ad". So sad. Last edited by KevinH; 04-21-2026 at 03:08 PM. |

I actually missed the Jutoh pimping the first time through. We'll definitely keep an eye out.

I have recently seen other first posts by a new user that look like AI generated ads disguised as responses to a thread. The future of spam is here!

Uuuugggghhhhh! All the world needs is AI generated ad spam, and AI built tools to attack website security and apps ... (sarcasm)
They say the good always comes with the bad so hopefully we will see more good coming along soon. I guess the bad always comes first! |
