Error opening saved file
Hello, I've saved my ebook in Sigil in epub format but when I try to open it I get the error message: "Error opening file. No such file or directory."
Has anyone else come across this problem? Or can anyone suggest how to deal with it? Many thanks, Helen |

Sounds like you're trying to open from the 'Recent' list and the epub has been moved since it was last opened in Sigil.

Thank you for your quick reply. I'm trying to open the file as a pdf from the folder I saved it to. I get the error message when I right click and select 'Open with...' then select a pdf reader. The problem is not that I can't open the file in Sigil (I can!) but that I can't view it as a pdf. Sorry that I didn't make that clear in my first post.

Sigil does not open or show pdfs. Sigil is an epub editor. Are you confusing it with Calibre which has a built in Reader/Viewer which does support the pdf file format?

Yeah, I guess I'm unclear on why you would think you could open an epub (you indicated you saved it as an epub using Sigil) with a pdf viewer? You would need to convert said epub to pdf first.

Thanks for your replies. I've opened other epubs with a pdf reader before, so I thought I could do the same with the one I created on Sigil. That way I'd be able to see at a glance how it looked without having to keep sending it to my Kindle. Anyway, that's what I've had to do in the end and it's all sorted now. Thanks for your help!

Also... there's lot's of programs you can install on the same machine as Sigil to read epubs. There's no need to keep sending it to your kindle (which doesn't read epubs either, by the way). |

I've never heard of ADE being referred to as a PDF viewer. But even if it CAN view PDFs, it's definitely using an epub rendering system to open/view epubs.

In my mind, "PDF viewer" implies a single function application used to view pdfs. I would never refer to a multi-format ebook application as a PDF viewer. But whatever. Saying you're opening an epub with a PDF viewer still doesn't make any sense to me. I guess it doesn't have to. *shrug*

IIRC Sumatra started out as PDF only, their epub Ifilter came to my attention in late 2017, so I guess it was multi format by then.

I'm not sure what you mean by Kindle not reading epubs. I've been sending the epub to my Kindle in order to view it there and make sure the changes I've made have worked. |

Kindles do not read epubs, literally. Epubs need to be converted to a format that the Kindle supports.
How are you sending them to the Kindle? If you are sending them to Amazon first, Amazon converts the epubs to something the Kindle can read. Depending on what tool/method you are using to send an epub to your kindle, that tool/method may be converting the format for you. But Kindles cannot read epubs. It isn't possible to send an epub directly to a Kindle and read it there. |
