Calibre on Windows 10

Apologies off the bat if there is an answer to this somewhere in the forum. I just couldn't find it.

I have calibre installed on Windows 10, 64 bit version. Somehow it remains on version 5.29 no matter what I do. I tried a fresh install, but nothing works. I would be grateful for help!

You went to the official download page:

downloaded and installed the latest version and it STILL shows you as being on 5.29? Have you tried uninstalling all copies (perhaps removing portable versions?) and then installing?

Most common:
You have a 32 bit version and now a 64 bit version. The shortcut is for 32.
Uninstall all versions the normal way (not with a 3rd party remover) using the control panel. Then install the 64 bit version (64 is in the installers name)

A 'normal' uninstall, leaves the settings and Libraries

ANother thing to check you have the CALIBRE_DEVELOP_FROM environmnet variable set.

Here's what I've just done. I uninstalled from Windows Apps and Features, just like any normal unistall. Then I did a cold boot and reinstalled. Still on version 5.29, tells me there's an update to 6.14.0, the newest version which I just now downloaded from the Calibre site and should have been installed.
As far as I know, I have always had the 64-bit version installed on this machine. And of course the link to the newest verson in the lower left corner of Calibre links to 64 bit.
I had already tried to find a solution on the Internet, and found one that said to delete a Calibre folder before the fresh install, unfortunately I don't remember which, but that didn't work either.
Do I need to delete settings as well? Because I have my library in a non-standard folder, but the new install still has all the books in it.
I am a longtime Winodws user and still can't figure out what's wrong, which is a shame because I love Calibre and have been using it pretty much since I got my first Kindle in 2014!

Is this a setting in the registry?

Assuming you installed to the default locations, if you go to that location and run calibre.exe, what version opens? On my system, the path to the executable is:

"C:\Program Files\Calibre2\calibre.exe"

Its an environment variable. if you dont know what it is, then its unlikely you set it.

After you uninstall.
Try and launch Calibre (if there is a second install, it will launch). You need to find that. (or is it possible you uninstall is failing?)

Are you sure that the file you are trying says:

calibre-64bit-6.14.0.msi

That's exactly what I see.
My son recently changed my OS over to an SSD and I still had the original OS files still on the now D: drive, formatted that which I should have done long ago, but of course that changed nothing.
Is there any obvious change from 5.29 to 6.14 that I could see in the program? I mean, if it's just telling me that it's 5.29 but has actually updated to 6.14?
I'm really at my wit's end here!

Stop the Press - do you have a calibre2 directory in C:\Program Files (x86)?

If you do, open it and have a look at the properties of calibre.exe.



If not do you have a directory named calibre in C:\Users\<your windows user name>\AppData\Roaming\

If you do: try renaming it to calibre_save and then start calibre - hopefully you should get the calibre welcome wizard.

Nope, it's right where it belongs, in the Program folder. (Well, Programme, since my OS is German. But that is irrelevant!)

"Program Files (x86)"is notionally where 32 bit apps live, one of the changes in version 6 was that the 32 bit version was scrapped.

Multiple versions of calibre can be installed on Windows - do a search for calibre.exe on all your drives, if 5.39 is executing it must be there somewhere.

And check the properties your desktop, taskbar, and start menu shortcuts - should look like this:
