Dolly Branicans mand, John, er stået til søs med sejlskibet Franklin på en handelsrejse til Singapore og Indien. Efter hans afrejse drukner deres barn i San Diego-bugten, og Dolly mister forstanden. Efter fire års forløb bliver hun helbredt, men kun for at opdage, at hendes mands skib er forsvundet på havet.

Imidlertid har hun også arvet en større formue, og hun bruger denne formue til at købe et skib, Dolly Hope, og sætte en storstilet eftersøgning efter sin mand i gang – en eftersøgning der fører hende til det malajiske øhav, en lille ø i det Indiske Ocean og til Western Australias ørkener.
