Get Identifiers before downloading other metadata? Redunant ID merge option?

1. Does downloading Identifiers before downloading the rest of your metadata improve how thorough your subsequent metadata is?

For example, select a book, ctrl+D, Configure Download, Metadata Fields to Download: Select None. Then on the next download configure it to Select All metadata.

2. When Reviewing Downloaded Metadata you can long-press the arrow for Identifiers and there is a separate Merge Identifiers option.

It seems like by default Calibre (5.44) already merges my current Identifiers with downloaded ones. When would you want to use this function?

1. no pre filling identifiers just means they will be used in preference to title/author based searching

2. Not sure what you are asking. When reviwing you can change individual fields instead of all of them as would happen without reviwing.

What I mean is, why is there a button to (manually) merge Identifiers when they seem to already merge by default?

For other fields, I understand having the merge function as they overwrite by default.

So you can do th emerge again in case you want to after editing them.
