copying from one library to another

my Apple iCloud stored library failed dramatically when I bought a new computer, losing a third of the actual books, with the database still intact. Consequently I am now trying to rebuild the library from a ragged assemblage of backups. I have read lots of posts about copying from one library to another, but none of the advice aligns with my current experience: when I right click on a book, there is no option to copy the book to another library. Am I missing something?

Did you create another library? The option is not there if you only have one library.

I also have a question about copying book(s) to another library. And also what is & where is the calibre database so I can change its permissions or I should not do that?

I was able to copy a book to my 2in1 laptop after some manipulations; the 1st time I received an error of "trying to copy to a 'read only'" folder. Changing the security on the laptop did not work; but found that if I do a switch the desktop library to the 2in1 laptop it worked. Just found that the desktop calibre now boots up slowly since the laptop has been shutdown & no longer on line.

After that I was going to do the same with Surface go 2, BUT I used the default name of 'calibre library'. Think calibre would know which 'calibre library' I would be using? Would renaming the Surface Go 2 library have any problem surface?

All my libraries have custom names, never have had a problem. But then they're all on the same drive, I don't copy over a network. So I have no idea about read-only errors. Calibre doesn't work well over networks, it's meant to work locally.

My intake Library is on the next PC over (on my desk),
I routinely PULL over my wired network.
1)Calibre is NOT running on the Intake Host
2)I Pull from the Main PC (I found pushing from Intake to be unstable)

Both machines are Windows
This is NOT a recommended procedure. It may work? YMMV

I have been copying books to the NAS for a long time even tho Synology ver 7+ killed using the 2 apps that displays the library for readers. I mean, it is just copying of a book & metadata.

I just found that my Surface Go 2's calibre library shows on the desktop as 'calibre-library' so the distinction is the hyphen. Did not do any changes to the permissions on the Go 2.

Now another question arises why isnt' there an item for rename the library on the Surface Go 2? It is also running win 11 pro.

Anyway I am set as far as copying goes & is better/easier method for getting the laptop & tablet update. I have been doing the hard way of using the calibre on the laptop/tablet to "add books" to get the books from the destop; and it is much more work when adding mutiple books.

You can only rename a library if you're not currently in it. That means you must create another library on the Surface Go, switch to it, rename the main library, switch back and delete the new library, unless you want it to stay.

Preferences -> Toolbars & Menus -> The context menu for the books in the calibre library -> select Copy to library from the left and click on the blue arrow pointing to the right.

I think that what I was doing can be regarded as "pulling" the book from another Calibre library. e..g. on the laptop I would select 'add' books & get presented a display the last time I added a book (I do have that folder sorted by date). For multiple books, I would need to change the author to the another author's book.

Too bad the menu's (get books) do not have the ability to add a Calibre library's ipaddr for selection of a place to get a book. I am just adding any new book that I've bought to have my laptop & tablet 'in sync'.
