newspapers on kindle scribe?

has anyone subscribed to any newspapers and have them delivered daily to their e-ink kindles. what's your experience? and i noticed on the amazon site that the oasis and scribe are NOT listed under the Kindle e-Readers group as being compatible with publications. does that mean that it won't deliver to the oasis nor the scribe? or just that the experience on these two devices is not optimal?

i'm thinking about adding a newspaper if the experience is good with a scribe.

They used to offer free trail subscriptions. Has that gone away?

trial subscriptions have not gone away...at least not for the one that i was looking at.
depending on the paper, the length of the trial period differs.

but i mainly don't even want to try it out if i can't get it on the scribe in the first place.
that and how it actually looks and functions.

I subscribe to a newspaper that I read on my desktop computer, and also on my Fire Tablet. In both cases, I used a browser to access the paper which comes as a pdf.

I have experimented with transferring the pdf to my Kindle, but I have found that the experience has not been good. The basic issue is that the e-edition of our paper is a pdf of the paper in its entirety. When reading it using a browser, I can expand the image to read the small print. But I can't easily do that with my Kindle.

I haven't asked our paper if they are set up to deliver directly to Kindles, but I suspect that Kindle readers would not be viewed as compatible devices.

Can you give a specific example?

If the list of compatible devices for a publication on Amazon does not list any e-ink Kindles that means it cannot be delivered to those devices. Although sometimes a listing for an older publication may not list all of the newer devices that can read it.

here is what amazon says about newspaper compatibility with devices (at least for the LA Times). no mention of the oasis nor the scribe.

I'm betting amazon and/or the LA times have been asleep at the switch for years.

There is no reason that the reading experience on the original Oasis would be any different than on the Voyage and I don't see any motive for the times to cut off access beyond Voyage. The UX would likely be better on the Oases 2 and 3. Maybe there is something that needs to be tweaked for the Scribe, but I doubt it.

You inspired me to download the the Wall Street Journal PDF and use Send To Kindle to move it to my Scribe. As you describe, it is just a PDF of the print issue and it does work, but it’s not ideal. I can zoom in easily and navigate around the page but I think the size of the PDF (20 MB) causes some problems as the Scribe tries to refresh the screen (you can obviously see the screen refresh a few times each time you move around the PDF). I might use this if I wanted to read it outside but it would not replace how I normally read it on my computer.

I signed up for a free trial subscription of that newspaper and it definitely works on an Oasis. I suspect that they just haven’t bothered to update the product page for that newspaper since the Voyage was released.

One thing to beware of: those trial copies will remain in your library forever. There is no way to permanantly delete them.

Publications in general definitely do: probably 50% of what I read on my Oasis 3 is publications, both Calibre-generated and subscribed from Amazon. They work as well as any mobi entity (so no hyphenation and occasional decade-old oops-blank-page-hit-back-then-forward bugs).

i tried it out for two days and decided to cancel. there is considerably less material than on the actual newspaper. and navigation from article to article is non-existent except for the table of contents.

i cancelled my subscription trial after my second delivery. then removed the two days worth from my kindle. they disappeared. but i had my filter set for "Downloaded". so they went away as soon as i removed them. you are correct. if i turn off my filter(s), they do show up and there appears to be no way to remove them. i just have to remember to set my filter for "Downloaded" to not see them. i side load most of my content anyway. so this isn't a huge issue for me.

That's where the joystick or D-ring were handy when kindles had one.

But surely there is still a way, NullNix can probably help with that.
