Sigil sluggish under Windows 10
I have just installed Windows 10 64-bit on a PC formerly running Windows 7 64-bit. Clean install not an upgrade one.
I downloaded Sigil and installed it but found to my surprise that 1.9.20 was very slow and laggy typically taking a couple of seconds to respond to mouse and keyboard input, on the default file that opens when you start Sigil. I tried uninstalling 1.9.20 and going back to 1.8.0 which I had been using under Windows 7 but it was exactly the same. Could this be a hardware issue? Is my machine perhaps just too old and slow for Windows 10? It is an i5-3470T with 4 GB RAM. Note: I am not running any AV or security software other than Windows 10's default. All drivers are up to date. |

If Sigil 1.8.0 is running slower on Windows 10 than it did on Windows 7 (on the exact same hardware), it's not likely to be the hardware (although 4Gb of ram sounds a tad low for any application that uses QtWebEngine if I'm honest).
I seem to recall having my own issues with extreme Sigil sluggishness on Windows 10 a long time ago. If I recall correctly, Sigil had run afoul of some built-in compatibility mode (based on the Sigil.exe executable name). Right-click on sigil.exe and open the Properties dialog and go to the Compatibility tab. See if there's anything obvious there. You can also try excluding Sigil's program folder from Defender. Excluding Sigil.exe alone might not be enough since Sigil also uses qtwebengineprocess.exe and python.exe. Are all of the Windows 10 updates applied? I also seem to remember some serious app slowdowns all along the Windows 10 update road. Last edited by DiapDealer; 11-20-2022 at 08:33 AM. |

Another thing to do that may help is to upgrade the RAM to 8GB or 16GB. I'd go for 16GB if at all possible. 4GB is not enough. 8GB is on the border especially if you have a mechanical hard drive for the cache.

Could the debug log environment variable be set somehow?

It would definitely slow things down if it was set.

Thanks for the suggestions.
I managed to fix the issue in the end - I downloaded and installed the official Intel graphics driver and blocked Windows 10 from "updating" it in future and this completely cured the issue. As an aside, having only 4GB RAM doesn't seem to cause any issues; I have been happily using Notetab, Sigil, and Edge together today without any slowdowns. But I have SSDs rather than mechanical hard drives which may be the secret. |
