Thomas Clark Hinkle (1876–1949) was an American novelist who specialized primarily in children's western dog and horse stories. He produced some 40 fiction titles and one non-fiction title. His children's books were frequently used as supplemental reading in schools in the 1940s and 1950s and many titles were widely reprinted. This particular title was published posthumously.

Dapple Gray is a wholesome children's western horse adventure. There is a tiny bit o' cowboy cussin', i.e. the word "daggone" appears a number of times.

The text source is the 1950 William Morrow and Company first edition hardcover. A single typo was corrected, otherwise the text has not been changed. An author bio and bibliography are added content.

The ebook is EPUB3 but is compatible with the older Adobe RMSDK engines used on Nook and Kobo devices. It has passed ePubCheck, the Ace by DAISY accessibility checker app, and Send-to-Kindle is supported with enhanced typesetting enabled.

Version 2.0 was an overhaul to improve accessibility. The accessibility summary was rewritten and accessibility metadata updated. The bibliography had corrections to the publication order. The author bio had a minor correction and some additions. The title page received a tweak and a splash of color.

Version 3.0 has higher resolution cover and title page images. An extended description of the cover image is available. A rights page updates the public domain declaration to "life plus 75" or less. Sources used for dating the bibliography are attributed. The author bio attribution is more formally arranged. Further information was added about the print edition. A piece of CSS that proved problematical on a Nook testing device has been removed. Other minor tweaks.
