Problem putting a book from calibre into Kindle

As I am new to the forum and this is my first post, please excuse if this is not the correct place to start a thread with my problem. I was success ful in getting a book from Gutenberg into Calibre. However, after I tethered my Kindle to my PC, and used "send to device" in Calibre, the book was sent to my Kindle and I was feeling good about seeing it arrived on my Kindle, however when I clicked to open it, I get the message" unable to open item, If you purchased it from Amazon, delete the item and download it from the cloud on home".
I have used the above procedure in transferring book from Gutenberg, to my Kindle via Calibre, and never had a problem in opening it.
This the first time I have seen the "unable to open" message.Please can someone help? I am using a 10th generation Kindle Paperwhite.

What format is the book? If mobi, try to convert to azw3 instead.

However I use conversion options on all Gutenberg ebooks and no longer use any directly. Their formatting has got poorer too, with multiple nested Blockquotes and other issues. Sometimes I need to edit them.

The file you created using calibre is probably damaged in some way. If the book is in the public domain you can post the MOBI file here. Then someone can look at it and verify that the problem exists and try to determine the cause.

I've experienced this a couple of times before. It also happens with books that were uploaded via email or send to kindle. On both my k4nt and 10th gen.

I get the error the first time I open the book, and then it opens up just fine the second time.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I now tried the following: In calibre I used convert from mobi to epub. Same error in Kindle, "cant open this file". Next I tried In Calibre convert to AZW3, and got same error?
In that the book came from Gutenberg, should I try to take it out of Calibre, and start over? To do that do I use the "remove book" in the Calibre toolbar?

I really appreciate all and any suggestions. I would like to learn how to post a file into the forum, like jhowell suggested. Could someone send the steps I need to take to do this? I learned that the book can be read in Calibre, without a problem? But not in my Kindle. I thought I might remove it from Calibre, and start over again. Grateful fo the help. jamesemu

If the book is not copyright, you can use the paperclip attachments icon in the top tool bar or the manage attachments button below the message entry panel to attach the file to a message.

What is the book title/author and which format did you download? If there is more than one version of the book on Gutenberg, what is the URL for the book's page on Gutenberg?

You really haven't provided any clues to what is causing the problem.

I mentioned in my original Post, that although it opened and I could read it in Calibre, when I sent it to my tethered Kindle, and after ejecting, I thought it was in my Kindle, but it would not open and instead I get the "Unable to open, If you purchased it on Amazon, delete the item and download it from the cloud on home". I downloaded the Kindle format of that book from Project Gutenberg. I then sideloaded the file (pg38497-images-kf8.mobi) to my Oasis 2 running the latest 5.15.1 firmware via USB. Attempting to open it produces the "Unable to Open Item" error as previously reported.

The internal metadata shows it to be in KF8 format, created using calibre version 4.17.0 on October 17, 2022. Looking at the file shows the typical minor structural errors that calibre produces for Kindle formats. I will look into this further to see whether I can determine what specifically in that file leads to this error.

Although this file is in KF8 format it downloads with an incorrect .mobi extension.

I found that renaming the file from pg38497-images-kf8.mobi to pg38497-images-kf8.azw3 allows my Kindle to open the book without error.

For what it may be worth, I downloaded the Kindle version of this ebook ( filename was pg38497-images-kf8.mobi ) which calibre happily imported as a KF8/azw3 ebook. I then opened it with calibre's editor and clicked on the bug icon. It came up with quite a few errors. Most of the errors were "The linked resource '1256390145133242086_cover.jpg' does not exist" in the html files plus an Invalid id:73721-2dc923c5fc2b4a448ba58a66306d939e in part0041.html. That and an unused 00004.jpeg image which seemed to be a thumbnail for the cover image.

I clicked on the Try to correct all fixable errors automatically option and it correct all the errors except the 00004.jpeg file not being referenced error. After this I sent the fixed ebook to a PW4 with frirmware 5.15.1 and it opened happily. Though I'm not sure about a table of contents with overlength chapter titles shown in narrow columns.
