Missing Graphics
Hi,
First post. Sigil on Windows 1.9.10 Recently I'm having a weird problem. I have a book that has lots of images. Lately, and this is something new, I'm noticing some days that if I go back to pages that I already worked on, they are missing some of the images I loaded. If I look in the Book Browser Images section, they are actually GONE!!! I have to reload them again one by one. I always save the document, btw. But, in a few days, some images are gone again. This is really bizarre. Is there a maximum number of images that I can put into a book? The one I'm working on will end up having around 1000 images. I wonder if it's Windows 11 doing weird stuff? This never happened when I worked with Sigil in Linux before. Thanks, Regards, Fran |

I can think of a few things that might cause that behaviour'
1. Are you by chance leaving Sigil open for days at a time while editing the same book? (i.e. not saving the epub and quitting out of Sigil until ready to use it again)? Sigil stores books opened into its own tmp folder which defaults to the system tmp folder. But some operating systems will walk files that exist in tmp folders and if it deems that file unused or old, the os will simply delete them under Sigil's nose. There is a Sigil Preference setting that allows you to set a different tmp folder workspace in that event. But there are Windows settings that can disable this "os feature" as well. 2. Additionally Anti-virus and Defender software can sometimes interfere with Sigil and it needs to be told Sigil is safe to allow Sigil to work properly. 3. And how exactly are you adding those images to Sigil? Are you using the "Add Existing ..." menu item or using some other way? If manually adding files to Sigil's tmp folder that could prevent the opf manifest from being properly updated. Last edited by KevinH; 11-05-2022 at 08:37 AM. |

Hi,
Thanks so much for the comments. It's gotta be the temps. I do save very often but I do leave Sigil open all the time. Just close the lid the laptop when turning off. I think for now on after a session I will actually close the program and I bet this will not happen again. And yes, I add the images thru the Add Existing... It's a great app, by the way. Regards, Fran |

You can go to Sigil Preferences and select your own pre-created folder as the new tmp location just for Sigil, and Sigil will continue to use and properly clean up that folder as long as it still exists.

Looks like KevinH covered everything!
Welcome to MR by the way! Also… 1000 images!!! That is quite a bit although I don’t know if any actual restriction on the number of images. Are these all unique images?? The reason I ask is that I’ve seen some books with hundreds of chapter break images (like * * *). The same image can be used multiple times in the same ePub. Just wondering. Cheers |

It has happened to me very seldom (and with previous versions of Sigil). All (or almost all, I don't remember) the jpg files disappeared, but the html references remained.
I couldn't find any explanation then, and in the end I thought it had happened because I had added a jpg by opening the "Add existing..." menu with the mouse over the html file instead of over the "images" folder. That's what I thought, but I don't know if I was right. |

No, see above for solution. MacOs, Win 10, and Win 11 all have that same self-cleaning tmp folder "feature". Linux as far as I know does not.
