Including series name in title? (books and comics)
I am working on organizing my library, and have come to a conundrum and hoping this community can help me decide what to do. Some of my books have the series name included in the title, e.g.:
Series: A Song of Ice and Fire Title: A Song of Ice and Fire: A Game of Thrones From googling around, looks like the general consensus is to keep extra stuff out of the title, so instead it should be: Series: A Song of Ice and Fire Title: A Game of Thrones However, I have several comic series in my library in which the individual issues/files do not have "unique titles" - just generic titles, like Issue 1, Issue 2, etc. So with the series in the title, an example would be: Series: The Amory Wars: Second Stage Turbine Blade: Volume 1 Title: The Amory Wars: Second Stage Turbine Blade: Volume 1: Issue 1 (This example is even more complicated because the series itself is part of a larger series, with multiple volumes...so this is how I labeled the series...not sure if there's a better way.) If I follow the same convention as above (removing extra stuff), it would be: Series: The Amory Wars: Second Stage Turbine Blade: Volume 1 Title: Issue 1 Which I guess isn't a problem, but the part that is a little weird to me is that due to the folder structure of the library, this would mean that there are two files with the same filename. For example, I have: Claudio Sanchez\Issue 1 (42)\Issue 1 - Claudio Sanchez.cbr and also: Claudio Sanchez\Issue 1 (49)\Issue 1 - Claudio Sanchez.cbr Maybe there's no problem with this, but it just kind of bothers me that the filenames are exactly the same. So wanted to get this community's opinion - what convention should I use? Just want to make sure I follow something consistent, since inconsistency bothers me... |

Pick a way and be consistent
![]() Do not be surprised if BOTH the series + series_index are the same(ish) Title: Joe's tale V1 Series: Joe's tale [1] FWIW come up with a plan that sorts well (Magazines come to mind) Name #001 <pad with leading 0's if under 1000 issues expected. Name 05 2010 and the series is Name [2010.05] <- note: the year is first dot month. You can't have a range in the index value, so just use the first month if a double (Jun-Jul) Consistent within any series is the rule ![]() |

The folder and file names within a calibre library are arbitrary, the value in basing them on author names and titles (after Ascii-izing and truncation) is to make them comprehensible to the user should they stop using calibre. They could equally be the library database author and book table row numbers - e.g. Books/23/854/854-23.epub. If you add a book that uses a non Latin alphabet in the author name and title (e.g. Cyrillic or Chinese) it gets transliterated to Latin, Ascii-ized and if necessary truncated -- e.g.: BR |

One other thing though - if I do what I described above and just set titles to things like "Issue 1", "Issue 2", etc. wouldn't that be how they show up on my Kindle? I don't think my Kindle cares about the series attribute... |

For Kindles: Use the Metadata Plugboard
That takes Library data (in its proper locations) and inserts it into a field that the device uses. The Library remains untouched ![]() eg Code:
{series_index:0>5.2f|| - }{title} -> You must jailbreak you newer Kindle to do similar |
