Hardware Problem
Hi all.
I have had the 700 for 45 days, no single scratch on it but since yesterday have a problem on the case. Right side of it has been moved away from the main body, leaving a gap. I cannot describe it well, attached are 2 pictures. I have had 500 and 505 before this one for almost 2 years and know how to take care of my devices. Reader hasn't been dropped, there has been no pressure applied to it at all. I today contacted Sony today, got an email to send the reader to them and wait for repair. I'll call them tomorrow and ask them to send a new unit first, if possible. Has anybody else seen this problem? Thanks, David |

I had the same problem. I took my device back in to the Sony store and they replaced it. I'll bet it is a device design weakness...
I hope my new one doesn't do that too... |

I just broke mine like it cause i didnt think it would be too hard to fix. here is how i fixed it. its the stylus. if you put the stylus into the the carrier halfway then Pull or push it enough it will pop out. its a simple fix. I decided to break mine like it, had the same thing. first Remove the 4 screws on the back, then the two screws on the bottom then 1 scrow on top. remove the bottom plate, remove the volume button and the magent, under this is the final screw, remove it, then remove the top/side plastic plate. you probably bent a few of hte plastic pins trying to wedge the sidin back in. straiten them to about 30 degrees and replace, and put back all the screws and plates. go to the disassebly thread here for pictures https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34401 here is the flicker with instructions http://www.flickr.com/photos/2172951...7611324679087/ just follow the first 3 steps. i hope i helped. Thanks Andybaby. Sony tech support said they couldn't ship a new unit, had to see my reader and repair it. I did not speak to customer relationship, they were closed on Saturday.
Then I took the reader to Sony Style (Stanford Shopping Center in Palo Alto, California), manager was very nice and exchanged the reader for a new one. I hope this one behaves better. |

ahh thanks. I think ill take a trip into manhattan and rebreak it to get myself a new reader.
there seems to have been dust or somethign that got under my touchscreen which is rather annoying if reading with the light on (otherwise you cant even see it) weather or not they will replace it i dont know because of this i dont know. i think its condensation from me reading while lounging in the bath. |

Yup, I have the same problem. However, there are a couple of nicks in my case right where the clip would be, so it can appear to be due to my dropping the unit (which I didn't) so the guy at the sony store is giving me a hard time... I'll try and call tech support to see if they can do any better. Failing that I'll give fixing it myself a shot - i would like a replacement instead, however

so i was in the city today (manhattan) for some computer work and decided to test out Sony after I finished.. which took less than an hour and 120 bucks in my pocket
I rebroke my reader as described in this thread and went into SonyStyles FLAGSHIP store.. (there is a whole story to this involving walking 15 blocks in the snow, but thats not sonys fault.. I got out a stop early on the train) anyway, the manager was all nice sort of, checked the floor model, which also was broken in the same way. and went to get me a new one, when she looked at my recipt from 11/11 she shut me down and told me i had to send it out to sony customer care. ugh. some crap about a 14 day exchange policy (I think that's a little low, besides in the warranty im guaranteed a new reader if anything happens in the first 90 days.. anyway. some time this week I am going to call customer service and see if i cant make my displeasure felt. Today I called and they mentioned a 30 day in store exchange. but it was india support i think, and he has never even seen a reader from the conversation i had with him. i got a different number who is only open Mon-Fri also based on the store display I dont see how anyone would buy the 700 over the 505. I am having some 505 envy... but I love the backlight. Last edited by Andybaby; 01-18-2009 at 05:03 PM. |

I recently got the same issue after I dropped my Reader. The solution turned out to be pretty simple:
1. Remove the stylus. 2. Turn the Reader over and remove the top left screw from the back (the one that's holding the popped out side plate) 3. Slightly shift the side plate up until its drops into place. Then shift it down until it's firmly fixed. 4. Put the screw back. |

it appears the readers' display area is 'air tight' as I could not move a single fleck of dust. The only way to clean the screen it appears is a flipping the hood.... ![]() image courtasy of Igorsk I'm experimenting on something else (another method) and will report back if anything positive comes to light. |

Server,
Does 'flipping the hood' improve the screen contrast (grey becomes white like 505?). Hughdal |

I would imagine yes but not much. You'll have to ask Igorsk as it was his disassemble
project. But don't get any ideas, the 7 needs the touchpanel to interface with. Beside the beveled gap would be unsightly. |

Server: How hard was it to flip that screen up? I'm probably going to just learn to do that for the dust as I don't think a replacement unit from sony would help matters.

I did not perform the surgery myself, I believe our good friend Igorsk did.
But from what I recall, he mentioned that the touch panel is only held on by re-sealable adhesive. The question is, will it look the same when you put the touch panel back on? My guess is yes (if you're carefull and use the right tools to extract and pry the seams off. Again, you might want to check with the dis-assembler himself for extra referrences ...
