How do I stop Calibre from converting CJK filenames when sending PDF to Kindle?

Apologies if this is the wrong subforum. When I send a MOBI/AZW* file with Chinese or Japanese characters in the filename to Kindle via Calibre, the filename is the same. However if I send a PDF file, the characters are converted to Latin (romaji, pinyin).

My Kindle at least, doesn't seem to have a problem with filenames with CJK characters in them. Is there any way to turn this off?

All filenames are converted to ascii characters when sent to a device, reardless of format. Your kindle is probably failing to read metadata from inside the PDF files.

As to how to turn it off, you cant. You can use the save to disk button instead to save the files onto your kindle, without converting the filenames.

Thank you for the reply. Yeah my Kindle (10th gen Paperwhite) sadly doesn't seem to be reading any PDF metadata, it just parses the filename and guesses which part is the author and which is the title, so filenames are important in this case.

Unfortunately using "save to disk" didn't avoid the conversion. I've just noticed that Calibre already converts the filenames when importing the file in the database, that seems to be where the latinizations are coming from. There's no way to avoid this?

I can open Kindle's folder and rename the file after sending it via Calibre and apparently Calibre will still recognize that it exists on the device, so it's not a big problem, but it would be nice to skip the manual renaming

Save to disk will not ascii-ize filenames unless you have the option to do that set in Preferences->Saving books. Unset it and you will be fine.

Nice, that does the trick! Didn't expect an option would restore the original filename after saving it in Latin characters in the Calibre library folder
