Calibre 6.0 send via e-mail timeout 10060

Hi All

have been using Calibre for a while now and it is really great. I have used the "Share to Device" function for a long time to send books to my Kindle and my Kindle app without issue.

However, having just upgraded to Calibre 6.0 the old process fails every time with the following error:

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "calibre\gui2\email.py", line 48, in run
File "calibre\gui2\email.py", line 137, in sendmail
File "calibre\utils\smtp.py", line 162, in sendmail
File "calibre\utils\smtp.py", line 142, in sendmail_direct
OSError: Failed to send mail: TimeoutError(10060, 'A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond', None, 10060, None)

I have not set any email server settings, only the 'send from' address is set to my Amazon whitelisted address. The error message seems to suggest a communication issue between Calibre and my OS (Windows 10) but I can't see any settings on how to address the error. I also searched the forums but didn't manage to find anything that triggered an explanation/close match to this issue.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated before I try rolling back to an older version as would prefer to stay up to date.

Thanks ... I did look at the manual too.

I am using Windows Defender and have made an exclusion for "calibre.exe" but that didn't seem to make a difference. (Am I right in reading the error message that the issue is well before any smtp relay issues as the OS appears not to be able to action the send email function?)

Are there any expected changes in behaviour on e-mail between versions? I have been very successfully using the e-mail function without a dedicated e-mail relay, is that now a requirement?

No there are no changes in email whatsoever. Something on your machine is blocking calibre 6 and not calibre 5.
