Changing Language
You can change the GUI language when a Kobo is set to "sideloaded mode", i.e. no home page and user account sort of hidden and WiFi Off.
You'd probably need WiFi to get any dictionaries unless you loaded them earlier. BUT the Advanced Notebooks won't work without a sync on WiFi, which needs you to be logged in/not on sideloaded mode. Sometimes even then the download of handwriting recognition fails. Likely this applies to the Elipsa too, but I didn't check. On FW 4.32.x Why did I want Spanish instead of English anyway? If I'm doing a lot of writing I want accents, because sometimes English (especially older style) uses them on loan words. Also though I know almost no Irish I do use Irish place names, people's names and some Irish words. The fada (áéíóúÁÉÍÓÚ) isn't just pronunciation, it's part of spelling so some words are different meaning. Like bán is white and bean or bainean could mean female, but that can be ban if it's a prefix. I'm not writing shopping lists and I don't want to be having to recheck which version of Maeve I meant (Méabh Óg is the younger one of two girls with same name. It's got many spellings.). |

Just to be clear, Kobo has only intended sideloaded mode to be a temporary mode to get the device working when you cannot connect to the Kobo server. Hence some things, such as this, might not work.
Having said that, try doing a firmware update check from the Device information page of the settings. This will check for and download firmware updates without needing to be signed in. It might check other things as well. Yes, you need WiFi to be on, but, it doesn't force you to sign in. |

On one Sage I couldn't get Advanced Notebook to download. FW downloads in general worked. Maybe the server needed was offline. I solved it by copying from a working Sage. Oddly the Elipsa when new didn't trigger a download when I opened the Advanced Notebook. But the Elipsa comes with the stylus/pen and when New/Reset the Sage hasn't even the Notebooks Icon. |

I don't mind signing in with a real email address as it doesn't ask for payment or address details and after years since my original Kobo Aura HD H2O they have never used that address nor passed it on. Zero emails except my tests!
I only have the Sidemode on because I use "Recent" "Reading" "Titles" as my "home screen", slightly like the old one where you could dismiss all tiles except books being read. |
