KOReader on Remarkable
I read somewhere that KOReader can be installed on reMarkable (mad overhype name?), but there was no suggestion how.
Can KOReader be installed on reMarkable and how is it done? It's an original model, though I think the reMarkable 2 simply drops the three handy buttons, adds RAM and a marginally faster CPU. Seriously poor compared to Elipsa, but the stock PDF reader beats the Kobo one. I put KOReader on Elipsa so as to have crop, but reMarkable does that. However it doesn't really support anything but PDF, though epub support is claimed it may be converting to PDF? KOReader might be handy for djvu. I got it second-hand for wife purely for some pdf novels out of print. She has a Libra for epub anyway. I figured out PuTTY to get a terminal on it and the only way to put PDFs on it on Linux is drag & drop from a file manager to a browser window one at a time and creation of directories only on the tablet. I don't imagine KOReader would make it easier to add files? |

I found this
https://github.com/koreader/koreader...-on-ReMarkable It's like one of those mad nested Chinese recipies. Never heard of these which seem to be needed first https://toltec-dev.org/ https://github.com/ddvk/remarkable2-...r#installation (Remarkable2, is it needed for original Remarkable? I thought the SW was nearly identical?) |

You need a launcher to run KO in all platforms that are not intended to run applications (such as Kindles, Kobos, Cervantes or Remarkables).
On the specific case of the ReMarkable2 you'll also need a framebuffer driver that's able to actually refresh the screen. That's the RM2FB on your link. It works as a service that dispatchs requests made by clients. The client/server protocol was made to be backwards compatible with RM1 (typical NTX ioctls & waveforms to drive the screen), so all programs that worked fine on the 1st model can be used on the RM2 with just that little program. |

It's the Original Remarkable, has the 3 three buttons.
So I don't need the RM2FB. Thanks, pazos. |

Sorry, I skimmed through your post and missed the part that said you already have one
![]() > I don't imagine KOReader would make it easier to add files? IMHO it doesn't make sense unless you're going to consume those files with KO in your RM1. in that case you can use https://github.com/koreader/koreader...ess-connection. Keep in mind documents sent that way are not indexed by the program that runs on the Remarkable (xochil). If you're going to use the device mostly for PDFs then I think you're fine with the standard interface. Also have a look at the very awesome projects that are already available for it: https://github.com/reHackable/awesome-reMarkable Most of them are extensions and hacks of the RM software stack, instead of full blown apps that run instead. |

Thanks
I'd considered buying a 2nd Elipsa for PDFs for wife as she doesn't like the 10" Lenovo tablet for that and was delighted with upgrade from Amazon Kindle PW3 to Kobo Libra (original), but the local CEX had a cheap enough original reMarkable. Oddly the reMarkable 2 while a bit faster is heavier (glass & alloy vs plastic), has no page turn or home buttons and a slippier surface if you did want notes. The note taking is more like a sketching app as it has layers and zero local conversion to text. Also both models only have about 6G of Flash free. The 32 Gbyte Elipsa with onboard Nebo for handwriting, USB-Mass-Storage (very fast), and decent meta-library origanisation seriously beats Remarkable (File manager view only) for reading or writing. But if you have less than 100 scanned old book PDFs and already have a 6" to 8" ereader, then a bargain S/H reMarkable (original, not V2) isn't a bad option. |
