Setting up a New Reader

As part of the setup process, Kobo added a download link for all my previous purchases under My Books. It also downloaded the first 5 books.

In the settings, Manage Downloads lets me delete the 5 downloaded books. Now they all appear as just links.

I side-load all my books via Calibre. How do I delete the links from the reader?

I bought my last reader 7 years ago, and don't remember what I did to clean this up.

I swear there was or is an option to hide non downloaded books but I can’t find it on a quick look through.

You can try removing the download which will give you a message about being able to restore it from your archive on Kobos site.

There are several hundred. Had to find a way to NOT do this one at a time.

Found this:

Under My Books, there is an ellipsis in the upper right corner. That menu contains a Manage Books option.

From there, another ellipsis gives you a menu to select all.

Then choose remove at the bottom.

This gives you an option to Remove downloads, or Remove from My Books.

The correct choice is Remove from My Books.

What I do is move most of my books into the Archive Section and only move them back when I want to download them.

You don’t delete the links per se. But in the Filter under Books, select “Imported”. Then you’ll only see the books you’ve sideloaded.

This is what I do too - putting them in the archive means no links showing up on my reader, but I know they're available when I want them.

I was unaware of archiving or filtering. They both seem like interesting alternatives.

For me, I 100% side-load. After the initial setup, I turn off WiFi, never to be turned on again. That's why I was looking for a way to delete the links.

If you don't want to ever sync books from Kobo, you could try using two accounts, one for purchases and the other for the device. Or try the sideloaded mode that was added in firmware 4.31. Of course, if you use 4.31, it comes with the "@JSWolf nag" feature, which might be a turn off

What I do is download all of my Kobo purchases in ePub and if there is DRM, I strip the DRM when I load them into my Calibre library. If I want KePub, I'll use the KoboTouchExtended driver to convert to KePub on the fly. That way I decide what I want on my Kobo and when I want it.

Archiving assists in sideloading. I can't remember the last time I downloaded a book to my Kobo by Wifi. I buy them on the website on my PC, download them, de-drm them, load them onto my Sage by Calibre, then move the purchased copy to my archive. All of this is done with the WiFi off

If that is how you are doing it, I would use two accounts. One to buy the books, and the other on the device. That will mean you the books won't download at all, so no need to archive them. Or at least, not as much need. As a process step, it might make sense, but, I'd probably do it after finishing reading the book.

If you are using firmware 4.32 (the most recent one as of this post.), you can simply add SideloadedMode=true to the [ApplicationPreferences] section of the .kobo/kobo/Kobo eReader.conf file

Use a Text Editor that will preserve the Unix NewLine. NotePad++ the most common example for Windows.

That's a great idea, thanks. I did buy and download to my Sage 2 books today to see how the store bought kepub experience is now, but I will look into trying your suggestion out.

What are the UI differences (if any) between sideloaded mode and just leaving WiFi off in standard mode? If I picked up your Kobo, would I be able to see at a glance which you are using?

The main thing you will see is that home screen is not used and the book list is displayed. There other differences are in the More menu and the settings. Anything that needs you to be signed in will be missing. And the store won't be available.
